So on my work today I saw a bunch cross over a red robot.... fine... nothing new.... but the worst thing is, that the car in front of me had to slow down to about 30/40km / h otherwise he would have taken out 3 cyclist.  If he didn't see them, it would have been a cycle massacre.

No wonder cyclist have bad names.

They were crossing the road in front of us at a 4 way crossing. They went over the red robot, and the car that was going  over a green robot... had to slow down for the cyclists that were in the wrong.

the problem is some road cyclists have an attitude, they think cause they are out riding on a public holiday making the effort the world should bow down to there needs.

not all cyclists are a problem, but the few that have no regard for other road users are the ones that give the rest a bad name.

If they had club clothes name the club

I think it is time we started naming and shaming the clubs and getting club management involved with rogue riders.

Even if it is not a sanctioned club ride, they will have to start getting their members to start adhering to road rules,  If I am not mistaken all clubs have a constitution whereby you agree to adhere to all club rules and rules of the road.

If the club can't get it sorted start fining the club whose riders are transgressing the rules.  A few fines paid are going to quickly get the clubs to start addressing the problem as it is now going to affect club finances

It's a good point, if those riders had been knocked down the club would be demanding action from CSA or affiliate commissions. The public would be persecuting the driver of the car before the evidence was discussed.

On a similar point; On Thursday morning I went to work at 5:30am, as I mostly do, and driving in Nelmapius street in Centurion were a massive bunch of riders.  They deliberately took up the COMPLETE left lane, no way for me to safely pass, given to oncoming traffic.  I had to sit behind them doing 30-40 kph for +-3min, before they eventually decided to form a single line for me to pass.  Isn't this just incredibly rude and selfish?  Sure, by blocking the complete road you are more visible, but flip, this is a bit to much.  Or am I wrong??

I might be opening a can of worms here, AND NO I AM NOT PICKING A FIGHT,but PM Andrew, or phone Cyclelab Jhb, and speak to Andrew.  I don't think he is comfortable with people dissing his Business's name.  Directly or indirectly.  And by riding around, ignoring stop signs or robots, is dragging Cyclelabs name through the mud.

Andrew are the first to say "stay safe"on Supercycling, but to have one of his Cyclelab branches, directly operating to the opposite will certainly have his blood boiling.

Andrew I am not picking a fight, just speculating on your way of thinking.

So for less than 5 mins you were a bit irritated by the behaviour of the cyclists. My friend, every day, from the moment I start to dress to go out cycling, until I finally get home safely, I stress about my own safety out there on the roads. If it's a 1 hour ride or 3 hours  - I'm constantly looking over my shoulder.

To answer your question- it's not rude, it's not selfish, it's a matter of survival! Two or three abreast slows traffic down, but if a motorist feels there's space, they'll squeeze through at the peril of the cyclist.

I lived in the USA for a while and cyclists were treated with the utmost respect - I've been part of bunches where traffic were backed for about 500 meters and motorists were patient. Even when we rode single file motorists would not pass unless there was no oncoming traffic - I know we've got a long we to go in this country, but we can all be part of the process, showing more tolerance and use Brakes instead of Hooters.

Red light crossing is a sensitive point and big bunches should definately have a Chief in charge that orders everyone to stop. Small bunches can proceed provided it's safe - my 2 cents

Naas where do you decide which is safe and which is not.  A small infringement here becomes a bigger one there and where do you draw the line.  Yes motorists have no respect for a cyclist but are we not architects of our own demise.   Yes I have also been taken out by a motorist, trying to take me out intentionally but how did someone not p1ss him off so badly that he has a hate for all cyclists

Its hard to believe that some cyclist(s) actually believes this "Small bunches can proceed (through red traffic lights) provided it's safe - my 2 cents"

Thats what I call 2 Zimbabwean cents worth of pConfusedep...

...................and why is that???

Ill tell you why..................because cyclists treat the motorist with respect.!!

Its very simple, and its a two way street,.........  if you jump lights and stop streets, ride all across the road, show the finger, make rude signs, swear, and generally behave as if you own the road.....................you will get NO respect in return.

Sadly that how cyclists got a bad name in the FIRST PLACE, and now its up to the cyclists to show they have changed - not the other way round.

.....anyway its all been discussed before, there are people here on the board who have openly said they jump lights and stop streets etc and they wont change - so now I ask , why should the motorist??

Now.... had that bunch that slowed you down for around 3 mins out of your whole day could have been either a: a horse drawn cart, b: a grader or likes, you would have been happy to sit behind it??? I think so.

You are obviously a cyclist, and these guys must have know what they were doing....  I am certainly not a cyclist, but a 'fun rider' and hope that you did not 'bollock' on them.......

3 Minutes... shame on you.

Well replied Naas.

Nope, I still think its selfish to claim the road for yourself.  I am more a fun rider than a cyclist, but I go out of my way to make way for cars on the road.  I will never ride in the middle of the road to be spiteful so that you can't pass.  Again, thats just rude.

Sometimes I even wave to a thank you to motorists who allowed me to cross a stop street first although they were there fist.
