650b slick tyres HOW???

So, like a fool I entered the Argus, and I want to do it on my trail bike.

I called around and managed to get some 650b 1.4 slicks (I asked for the biggest).  I have Mavix CrossRoc wheelset.

Now here is the problem, no one can tell me what tubes to use.  I have tried my normal tubes and ended up destroying 3 of them as they tend to catch on the tyre bead and deflate when I pump them up properly (roadie) hard.  I've tried everything and without luck - the tubes are just too big.

What tubes or tricks does the learned ones here suggest?  I've not trained at all, and whilst I have sufficient fitness to suffer a 5hr Argus, I wouldn't mind getting in at least two long road rides this week... but need tyres full of air to do so.

Help!!

Hello Simon

Long time no chat.

We get tubes from Conti for larger slicks. Usually in the 1.3 - 1.6 profile.

If your lbs doesn't have in 650B then 26" will work.

mmmmm. what about riding on your original "knobblies"?

I really couldn't be hassled to change my rubber this late in the game, so I will be riding my Vittoria's around the Peninsula come Sunday. I had too much of a jol on the weekend riding Meerendal and Conterman's, which along with my commute there and back via Tiekiedraai pretty much sums up my training for the weekend.

It IS a fun-ride after all... :whistling:

So my toppie has a 650b and recently bought a training set of wheels. He also got some slicks as sometimes we ride the mtbs on The road for extra work. The LBS gave him the wheels complete so all he had to do was change them over. He got some spare tubes as well. The other day he got a flat and we both stood in the side of the road like amateurs because the 700c tyre the LBS gave him was too big. Eventually made a plan and actually on the same ride road passed the LBS. Showed them and they agreed it wasn't right. They managed to find a conti tube that is actually 650b specific and swopped them for us. The original salesman that sold us the tubes didn't know this and just thought it would work.

Cool So it seems conti are one of the only ones with 650b specific tubes.

Thanks Sean!   This is exactly that I'm after.  a 1.3 to 1.6 650b tube would be perfect.  I'll continue phoning about.   Was thinking of a 26" tube too...

Been there, done that.  Seriously hated every second of it. :(

Pedalling down the hills whilst the old grannies with slicks were shooting past me.    At worst, I had a set of pretty worn Rocket Rons, but memories of that VERY long Argus cured me.

I couldn't find any narrow 650b tubes last week (I didn't really look hard, as I was in a rush to get the slicks sorted for my wife's bike), so I used 26" tubes I found at the back of the cupboard.

Granted, they were pretty narrow as well, but they worked a treat!

Did you sell the Intense? Sold mine about two years ago...

Kenda also do narrow tubes although for us was harder finding stock of them.

Yes, only got rid of Intense late last year.  Didn't ride it for about 2 years prior, just hung onto it, but eventually a friend's friend wanted it.    I see your Pyga is looking good!

I called Bridge cycles who apparently have a 1.3 650C tube in 27,5.   Will pop through later and pick two up.  No idea on brand.
