Cape Town police to use 70kph ebikes to target crime on Table Mountain.

The City of Cape Town has invested in a fleet of ebikes to tackle a recent spate of crime on Table Mountain.

To target an increase in rape and robberies, the police will be using Greyp G12 ebikes that are capable of reaching speeds up to 70km/h with no assistance from the rider. This would make them technically motorbikes in Britain, and therefore illegal on British trails, but is no worry for the police of Cape Town.

The bikes are specced like World Cup downhill bikes with RockShox Boxxer forks, a RockShox Vivid shock and Shimano Saint brakes (which use an energy recovery system to charge the battery)… We just hope the own-brand wheels can stand up to the hits at such high speeds.

The frames are made of steel and the panels that house the internals are carbon fibre. A Greyp bike will set you back €8440 (£6,550) plus shipping.

Wait what? That's £ 6550 @ R22-00 = R144 100 each...

Why not just then get an Off Road Bike ?

I am sure they already have those, they probably do not want to destroy the single track they will be paroling.

i am 100% with this...

by far the cheapy scrambler will be far better than this...

My Point is why spend R140 000 on an E-bike, when one is available for half that...

It will be like the Defense Shambles of the 26 Gripen Fighter Jets we bought at R19 bil each... 12 of them are in long term storage and we have only 6 x qualified Gripen pilots... Soon they will break and we wont know how to fix them and just chuck them in the basement.

They should all do a Financial Management qualification before getting jobs like these..

Refer to my point above.

Tender has gone out. Some tenderpreneur has been awarded the bid, despite their lack of knowledge re the situation, scope of the tender brief, required equipment and or services etc etc... Then runs out to 'source' the required item and finds this thing... Corrupt tender process. Unqualified service/ product provider. Expensive mistake. It's a very regular occurrence.

At least in this case it seems to be the right equipment - albeit unnecessarily expensive.

The KX450 takes loads more skill to ride and could see accidents happen frequently.

Just wonder who will be maintaining the E-bikes?

fair enough, but regardless of what they going to ride they need skill, alot more practice rather than skill can be obtained on easier terrain, these Gnarly Machine's not quite!

anyway i just think its a great way to waste tax payers money, nothing we going to say is going to change much
