Really a very very good question. I have 4 x bikes with all xo, xtr and xx1 parts. WHY would I buy another complete bike? But I would buy a new frame in a heart beat. Sure I am not alone. We are being robbed, as usual.

Bikes are a rip off in general

How is it feasible that i can buy a BMW F800 GSA for the same price that there are Pinas and Spazes.

Why a bad thing? Plenty of people drive Toyotas: reasonably priced & reliable. That's why they sell well. They have grown that way just like Giant have. It's not for everyone. Some people prefer charismatic Alfas.

I may have mistakenly read some sarcasm into your post.  Mea culpa.  We agree.  Economies of scale are a good thing.  Pity the rest of the mtb industry is hellbent on avoiding it.

he makes an excellent point though....we have day jobs, drive sensible cars have two and a half dogs and pay taxes. What is the point of having a hobby and going for the sensible option there as well.

I say go for the "alfa" when it comes to mtb. The more ridiculous the better in fact...crazy paint jobs / boutique brands that are more expensive and groupo's / technology that are on the stupid side of price vs returns.

The day i choose a mountain bike because of it value offering over the insane paintjob or video on pinkbike is the day I know I am doing it wrong. Mtb'ing in its essence is retarded, might as well go all in.

Feeling very philosophical this AM....

After a long battle with my current frames and endless warranties I am at the point where I need to walk away and try another brand.

My current setup has all the bells and whistles that one acquires after a few years , so all I need is the frame, but it seems no one sells just frames, you have to buy the whole bike and if you do you land up with the worst wheels or some entry level component that you don’t want anyway.

Specialized makes some nice bikes, but spend R80K and you get Deore, yes, lower than SLX and the 2011, 10 speed drive chain, with wheels ready from the bin.

The Momsen Vipa at R29K is an option but they only make it up to Large and I need an extra-large. Santa Cruz sells frames if you have a spare R46K and currently they are out of stock country wide, one can only guess the new price with our current rand $ exchange.

Anyone got any options.

Silly comparison...but then you do come from the Cape

There are a lot of similarities between a bicycle and a motorbike

Both have wheels

Both have brakes

Both have gears

Both have shocks

etc etc

the biggest difference is the engine

The bicycle does not have one.....

Firstly you have to consider the effect of Zuma on our currency. I am not trying to be political, just pragmatic.

Secondly, you must understand the manufacturing process. When a manufacturer decides to design or develop a new product, they would create various versions and mock-ups in order to decide on the way forward. Once a set of different prototypes have been designed, usually the next step involves testing, quality assurance and possible re-design.

For products such as software, this is fairly inexpensive, as your inset costs are proportionally lower than when manufacturing a tangible product like a MTB.

Next, the manufacturer has to build a mold for the bike in order to build a frame. Remember this has to happen for each iteration of the possible design, and it is a very expensive part of manufacturing.

Finally, once all these factors are concluded, and the design, manufacturing and marketing gurus have decided which model to put to market, all other prototypes and molds have to be destroyed in order to prevent rival manufacturers from building frames similar to the original molds that were scrapped.

Thirdly, why does a top of the line MTB cost as much as a BMW GS800 for instance? Simple, one has to consider all of the above in conjunction with the fact that BMW proportionally would sell waaaay more bikes than Specialized for example, and then also BMW does not bring out a new model every year. Then the LBS also wants to earn a profit before finally we as the buying public simply cough up anyway.

The bottom line is we are too invested in terms of passion and addiction to pedaling to pay whatever is asked without too much complaint.

And that is what makes it awesome

watch it... :offtopic:

I would hesitate to compare a house to the price of a car, UNLESS you think all Capetonians drive Lambo's or Ferrari's.

I just bought a 3 bedroom house in CT for 1.85 bar. I can get plenty cars for that money, and the price of a bicycle does not even come close.

Ha ha ha.....

Having lived in Scarborough and Fish Hoek I can confirm that those Capetonians drive skadonk cars that are very far from Lambos or Ferraris
