Bibs with thinner Chamois

So, I've been experiencing some saddle region issues. After playing with various different saddle types, I realise it's time to re look at what goes in between the Gooch and the saddle.

Currently using Assos S5 and S7 bibs but they continue to chafe. They feel like they keep bunching up inbetween my legs and need repositioning after a little while.

When I first started riding, I was given some old momentum branded bibs that I'm sure was actually for tris. But, it's had a really thin, fabric chamois. It was super comfy but I have no idea where to source something similar.

Would prefer to spend less than 1500 bucks but let me know what's up. Also, I'm a larger guy so something with a slightly more generous fit would be great. Currently fit like a glove in assos XL bibs.

Nothing wrong with riding in tri-shorts.  Although admittedly a triathlete - I only ride with tri-shorts, even on 180-200km ironman training rides. I find thick shammies very unncomfortable...

First Ascent make some decent tri shorts which are pretty good value.  Otherwise I find Orca or Castelli the most comfortable, though expensive.

If you want bibs, Castelli make some with a thin tri shammy in them.  Unfortunately only found them online from overseas so $$$  Also you need to be an anorexic Italian to fit in castelli, XL will be tough.

Bought some Specialized Atlas baggies that come with SWAT bib liners. I am amazed at how comfy that chamois is, and it is thin. Best shorts I have worn. That same chamois is in many of their shorts.

S7 is gold standard

Are you wearing the right size?

Must be lekka snug when you stand

And that memory foam in the new range is good stuff

And that is pretty thin

I have 1 First Ascent bib and have had similar problems,I presume the chemois size and shape of these specific bibs just dont fit my 'bottom' profile.

My other bibs are Craft, they are the same size as the First Ascent ones and they fit perfectly, have no problems with shifting or chafing,I have done rides up to 125km in them.

You probably just have to find youre fit and the Craft's are under R1k so it wont be such a expensive test.

Definitely the right size. I've loved them and they always felt comfy but later I've been struggling with abrasions and it's not the saddles fault.

It's a combination of massively thick pad on the assos and me being a proper fatty. Their construction and fit is superb, and I hate the fact that they're not working for me - both in money spent and the fact that the rest of the shorts are so damn comfortable.

Don't want to cut the conversation short but I have been offered some Giordana Frc bibs for a great price. All reviews point to great fit and thinner than normal pad - my brother in law has only ridden in giordana so I'm looking forward to trying them out!

I also struggled with Assos bibs

Got a pair of Sportful bibs yesterday, feels much better.  My Castelli's has also been give me excellent service over the years

I found that with my assos bib shorts they're amazing for the first 50km of a ride after that they become very uncomfortable but that may just be me.

I then went out and bought a pair of craft grand tour bibs and they're very comfortable for rides over 100km

I have the high mileage assos bib...big size...x2...when I first started using them they were the best thing that happened to my cycling experience...however I have also started experienced the same issue...after a while the chamois starts to bunch in the centre...to a point that you need to stop ...get off the bike and pull everything tight.

I hope to find a solution to this issue soon...I really like the fit and feel of my assos bibs...maybe it is time to drop assos a mail and ask them...I am sure others have experienced the same issue.

I sent assos an email yesterday morning...with all the details height...weight type of bib...etc etc...got a response from them last night...they have indicated they will look into the bunching issue and get back to me.

The reason i didnt take the assos bib which the chamois is not stitched to bib in the centre was because i was concerned they would bunch in the middle.(Fl.13.) they had a leather type material to protect from wear...slightly more expensive.

I not am sure if these are factors which are causing the bunching...

The bib has about 3000 km of use...being a slow newbie translates into many many hours in the saddle.(5-6 hours per 100 km)

When i bought the bib...the top of my legs were just blobs of fat...now there is more muscle than fat...the bib has stretched to fit the fat

The bib doesnt seem to bunch on the prolog saddle which has no cut out in the centre like the romin evo...i used the anthem which has a standard giant saddle...no issue with bunching during the Marriott freedom race.

Something else to consider is the seat height...maybe the seat is a ball hair too high which could be causing slight rocking which could result in bunching...on a saddle which is rounded the bib should just slide side to side...but with a cut out in the saddle it could be restricting...the reason it happens with the assos chamois and not my cheapie bib is the chamios is thinner and more dense.

This could be one of the reasons they have upgraded the assos chamios.

As i mentioned a while back there are other brands using a chamois which looks identical to the high mileage assos bib.

I use cream which is applied to the chamois for all rides over 50 km and for cadence classes...even though they are only +\- 30km (not use to the saddle and spend most of the hour seated)

Are you sure your saddle is perfectly level? Like measured it with a spirit level.  Maybe you shuffling around to much on the saddle and that's causing the bunching.
