Hi Guys,

I recently converted to a 1x10. 30T in front and 11-42 at the back with expander sprocket. My problem is my shifting is extremely temperamental. I currently have a long cage Shimano Deore Shadow RD plus.

Would it make a big difference if I moved to a medium or small cage? And if so, any recommendations? SRAM X7?

Thanks

Temperamental how? Is there enough clearance on the RD when in granny? Is the B-screw not the problem? Chainline - is the single ring on a converted double crankset? If so, you may need to insert spacers to make the chainline more ideal for the larger gears.

No - moving to a medium or short cage RD will not sort the issues. Long & medium cage is the preferred 1x setup.

I would try stick to what you have - if you move to sram at the back you will need to change your shifters.

That said, I run a 1x10 set up, with a 11-42. I have sram x9, but had to change from a medium to long cage as I could not get enough clearance to get the chain onto the 42.

The long cage has worked perfectly for over a year now, never any issues.

I would agree. Its not your RD that's the problem here. I run a short cage but with a 42 tooth range extender it wouldn't be a good idea. Its maximum capacity is an 11-36 which is what my next cassette will be. I love the short cage it stays out of trouble but if you want a dinner plate out back medium is as short as you can go as far as I'm aware.

you cant mix sram and shimano rear deraileur and shifters, the shimano uses a 1:1 actuation where Sram uses 2:1

Thanks, the issue lies when I am moving up in gears i.e. From small 11t upwards. The shifting is ok when going down

Did you remove the 15/17 and replace them with a 16 or did you remove either the 15 or the 17? If you did the latter it, at least in my experience, always leads to shifting problems ....

If you have a mini tea set saucer in the front there is no need for a dinner plate at the back

30t front and 42t back = spin out galore I can just think (overkill)

Did you change your chain too?  Worn chains don't like going up but can go down fine.

Is the B-screw set correctly?  If the tension pulleys are too far away from the cassette then it also creates problems.

Or maybe you just need some extra tension on the shift cable.

I think he must answer this 1st

...what shifter are you using?

Ya, I removed the 15 and 17. The guy at the lbs said that it is because of the various different parts on the cassette. That can apparently influence shifting. The thing is I have a friend who has the same set up and his works just fine

just thinking 30*42 = 0.7 and 22*36 = 0.6 so no better or worse off than someone on a triple, on the granny side anyway ....
