Thanks Robodog.

I have decided to by a SRAM derailleur and shifter. I have a SRAM cassette and whilst I know that one can mix a Shimano derailleur with SRAM cassettes, I am of the belief that a SRAM RD will be the answer to my problems. Furthermore, I have read extensively on this topic and the general consensus is that SRAM medium or long cage RD handle a 11-42 a lot better than Shimano. I think it may have something to do with the 1:1 ratio (although this is just speculation)

Dude. I really don't think it's your RD & Shifter causing the issue here.

Have you checked that the cable is on the right side of the securing bolt on the RD? If it's on the wrong side (ie not following the indentation) it will NOT shift correctly.

Also - you have a PG1050 cassette, right? What conversion kit did you buy, and is the replacement 16t cog put on the right way around? It has shift ramps on the side that is supposed to face outwards.

I really think that it's either the cassette itself, the B Screw setting or the way your cable is attached to the RD. I think you need to have a look at those settings before you start getting a new RD & shifter. At least put on an old 10sp cassette to see if the problem persists.

Must agree here...I had zero issues with my XT 10spd rear mech running 1x10 with the OneUp 42t and 16t insert...both with and without the RAD cage of theirs. So surely it's not the rear mech unless the mech is buggered?

yeah - unless the RD cage is bent, or the hangar itself is bent, it won't be the RD.

I have 2 bikes with 1x10 with expander rings. x0 medium and x9 medium rd using the 42t expanders. Smooth shifting up and down, the 42 is fitted with a 36t cassette. On my previous Shimano setup I had problems with a 42t on max 34t cassette, setup does not like to jump more than 6 teeth, the 40 expander however shifted well with the 34 cassette

Can only agree with this and Myles' sentiments .... I have 2 bikes setup in this manner with different Shimano RD's and both work fine. Having said that I remember it mentioned to me once that it is also possible that different frame design at the RD hanger may have an influence?

Hey man, I have the Rapide 42t at the back. Im pretty sure that the 16t is the right way around. I have heard some people have had better shifting when they get rid of the 16t and put the 15t or 17t back on? apparently the quality of the 16t can affect shifting?

Thanks for the advice man. Ill definitely try those things before purchasing a new RD.

I have read numerous posts that the X9 mediums are great with this set up. It was the reason why One Up invented the RAD cage because Shimano RD had numerous problems with the the 1x10 set up, when original SRAM RD worked fine!

You'll know if the 16t is wrong, the chain will slip if you put any kind of force when pedalling. I have the 16t replacing the 15/17 and it works brilliantly. This is the Kalbo part.
