Drop Offs

From curb size to as big as your brain can handle the technique is the same.

 

Light front wheel off the exit and once in 'flight' your weight centered over the bike so you don't rotate (forward or back). Aim to land both wheels at the same time. Start small aim to get your technique dialed so that when you start to do bigger drops you can stack the odds in your favour. 

 

Landing heavy on the back wheel on a drop this size will result in you possibly having a bad time.

Getting the rear to touch down first off a small flat landing is a drill I do help riders get used to the feeling of getting weight back to control the drop.

 

As the drops get bigger (with different types of landing transitions) and as guys get more experience and confidence, so they should then learn to match the attitude of the bike with the slope.

Rode Thaba today and there are two long downhill sections and the second section one has dips that i normally just roll through as im going at speed.

 

Today i did a small manuel at speed just before the dip and the back tyre just rolled through it and it felt AWSOME as its something i have never done before.

 

Not a drop off but wanted to share thay with you :-)

yeah. thats the preferred method for dips and stuff. FAR safer than just riding through them

I spent the weekend trying to lift my wheel with control (not wheelie, not there yet) over everything. Getting better. Definitely not veering out of control when the wheel comes down - and my arms aren't getting sore from it which is a good sign - which i think means I'm pulling at my handlebars less 

 

Still working on confidence to roll down steep declines - serious commitment issues with trying to just fly off it with speed - even teeny drops - one day I'll disconnect my brakes and just do it :D

one other thing. don't ever brake going over the lip, or while still in the air. Nothing rotates you quicker than your brake finger.

Want to see what i mean? hold your bike up at the saddle or top tube, by hand or in a workstand or however. Spin the cranks to get that rear wheel up to a speed. Now hit the rear brake.

That's just one wheel. Out on the trail, the same thing will happen irrespective of which brake you happen to be engaging.

This can also work to your advantage on cases where you overcooked getting the front end up over jumps etc. Dab the brakes to bring the front back in check.

for sure, but baby steps for now. don't want them dabbing on the take off ;)

Oh my point is for me certainly I was super confident but until I watched these I just didn't see why I needed to learn to put my back wheel down first. back wheel droppoffs changed my life.

 

I am STILL riding my HT (I know I know) and have tried doing the back wheel first drop-off a few times. I usually end up buying some new spokes and the odd rear hub after trying that maneuver. I'm not sure if the fact that I push 112 kilotigrams has anything to do with it, but I suspect it does...

 

Hopefully the new Camber I am eyeing will be less inclined to breakage when I do these crazy things.
