Here is my new Cannondale 2016 frame after a warranty claim.

It really looks nice (at least for me it does)!  Now I feel like keeping the bike again....

After I saw the prices on new Scalpel's I really feel like keeping this bike and use it for another 4 years or so.

(Maybe get a very cheap 140mm travel play bike)

What do you guys think this bike would be worth if I want to sell it?

There is very little parts on this bike that is older than 9 months.

you really in Perth? Doubt anyone here knows what the 2nd hand bike market is like in Aus, so we probably won't be able to comment.

Generally though, new bike price -30%

Yes I'am in Perth but I do a fair amount of trips to South Africa per year.  The mountain bike community in South-Africa are far more "active" :)

If you'd like to depress yourself try this simple exercise.

Go to your LBS and price Dot brake fluid and fork oil. That's if they'll even sell it to you but that's a different argument.

Then. Go to a motorcycle store and price the same stuff.

You're going to be surprised. But not in a good way.

I only buy fork oil and full finger MX gloves for MTB from a moto shop - far, far cheaper

Part of the problem in SA at the moment is that our first world product desires are subject to a very poor and fluctuating exchange rate. Bikes are overpriced everywhere. That new Di2 Scalpel is over $12k in the US for instance, but the range of bikes available is far greater and there is a much bigger second hand market.

Look at this very capable trail bike - http://www.bikeradar.com/mtb/gear/category/bikes/mountain-bikes/full-suspension/product/review-boardman-pro-fs-50371/

1500 pounds. Thats about R33k now but 4 years ago it would have been under R20k at the then exchange rate.

Cannondale Scalpel 1 29er. (2012 Model). The bottom bracket bearings / headset bearings never last more than 1000 km.

The headset bearings need a regular lubrication. Lift the sal under the stem and a quick run of finish line wet lube will do the trick.

The bb30 is a problem in terms of creaking and noises. You have to remove the cranks very 1000km and clean out the bb shell. Often it's not the bearings that are worn but rather just loose because the circlip has failed or shifted.

I've got all the tools now, and will do this regularly.  I've already started doing it, and it is not difficult !  will save me some money

Just got quoted R600 for two headset bearings for my Flash. Ouch. Can't ride until I replace them, I was not aware lube would help as I thought they were sealed units. Will try to lube them and see how long this set lasts.

BB30/BB92/BB86 sucks balls.  Big time. Bloody biggest b-up in the cycling industry.

Get rid of those separate press in BB cups, and get an Enduro or Wheels Manufacturing BB that screws in together to make the whole BB solid.  I am still P-off that I had to pay R2.5k to fix a design shortcoming on the manufacturer's part.  This problem is especially prevalent on carbon frames, Giant being one of the biggest culprits.  :cursing:

BTW, yesterday a mate of mine and I walked into the local Spez shop.  He is new to cycling and we checked out the S-Works Epic.  He checks out the price, being R159k, and says "But my brand new BMW 1200GS cost me that much".

I heard rumours that the new Cannondale Scalpel SI is R195k.

@Moridin, I have not been aware of these replacement Bottom Brackets!  How come the LBS don't mention this to me!!  anyway, I did a quick google search and the look impressive.  But there are so many options!  PF30, BB30 etc.

According to my knowledge my BB on the cannondale is the BB30.  that right?

Sjoe, I see it is expensive at around R2500.  but as you said, it is a massive issue and the manufacturers jjust turn a blind eye..

that is right.  the Scalpel blank inc is R195k.  That is why I think I will keep my 2012 scalpel that is more like a 2016 model lately. it is becoming a vintage, maybe I can make a profit in the future :)
