Leaking Avid Elixir5's

Good Morning Everyone,

I have a whee bit of an issue with my Avid's (and no, I do not want shimano so don't go there  )

I bought a set of elixir 5 of the classifieds last year, supposedly just serviced etc and they leaked out all their brake fluid while lying on my shelf while I finished my teocali.   (don't buy from one hit wonders on the classifieds)

I ended up buying rebuild kits from Revolution Cycles, rebuilt the levers and calipers and had the brakes hoses shortened and the brakes bled by a lbs.

Last night, not two weeks later, I see the rear brake caliper lever dripping fluid where the hose goes into the brake lever (just rebuilt). From the bleed, right of the bat, the rear brake nearly pulled right to the handlebar before the rear brake bit, where the front lever was perfect. The rear just got more and more spongy and i cant brake while in the seated position, but after seeing the brake lever leak I understand why.

I did some online searches and everyone states I should replace the lever internals (already did that).

Is there a chance the olive was installed incorrectly? The brakes was redone by a very reputable bike shop.

Or is there some other flaw I am missing?

Looking forward to your input.

stadig...stadig...unless you are selling them the 1000 post thing doesnt come into play

Herewith my 2c:

You are going to battle and continue battling to keep these things working. Buying new internals and servicing them is just throwing good money after bad. Take them off the bike and chuck them(dont try and sell them). Quickly go to CWC and buy another set(some of the specials are still on)

It might be that the m10 nut was not tight enough. That happened on a brand new set of Shimano's that I have.

OP, could it be that you made a mistake when rebuilding the levers? ie a O-ring that is not seated correctly?

No, you do need Shimano.. End of story. #gooidiek@kweg.

I have Shimano's on my other mtb, and dont like them. It is just deore, not slx/xt, but prefer the feel of the elixir's (when they work). Had elixir 5 on 4 of my previous mtb's, and cr's on another. comes down to personal preference I guess.

Won't sell them to anyone, knowing the issues I am facing. And cash flow not there at the moment to buy new set. need to get this set going, or it will be old school, foot on the back wheel, bmx brake style until I can replace them

Not sure how one can not seat them correctly, basic plug and play. Plan to take it back to the bike shop tomorrow to check it out. just don't want to waste more money on this brake set if it is not a simple fix. spent almost the same on them what I paid for them already. (could have bought a new set by now)...goed koop koop is duur koop

Ignore the trolls, it is very possible that the olive is installed incorrectly. ;)

now that is something I like to hear

Good luck OP. I hope it works out. Peter there are probably quite a few of us trolls that have had nightmares with Avid brakes, but it might just be a coincidence.

Thanx. Officially the first issue I have had with avid brakes. On the other hand, I want to take the shimano's of my other bike and drive over them with my car...luck of the draw I guess. After three bleeds I still have no joy with my rear brake. binds up and stiffens up all the time..
