Corrosion on frame? Yes

Spez warranty covers corrosion? No

Easy.

I am not a metals or technical expert by any stretch of the imagination........my logic does tell me however if treated properly and it passed quality control then............responsibility should ly with the manufacturer ........

Guys thank for opinions, but I need your expertise once again.I am sitting with another problem with the same frame. I total forgot to mention it as corrosion took over my brains. About six months ago the frame start squeaking and was in and out the bike shop to have it fix. I have send it to Olympic for a major service and the confirm that my BB and crankset is fine and everything else was fine. Two weeks on the bike the frame started squeaking again and it only happens when I am climbing. I have sent it to a specialized mechanic and he took the whole crank and BB apart and still commenting that I have a very good ceramic bearing and should not have any problems, but a week later it happen again. By that time I was training for the ARGUS and could not afford letting the bike stand by the bike shop.I got another mechanic to look at my crank area and he greased it up for the Argus. I don't know if the squeaking is coming from the crank or from the frame itself. The day I took the bike to Specialized in Stellenbosch for the corrosion/paint problem, I completely forgot to mention it to them. What do you think can be the problem. I will definitely be taking it back to them to have it check out and give me another report. Will be look forward to see what the assessment report will be telling me this time. Look for your opinion again. Could it be that the corroded area is making the noise, as I had the BB and crankset check out on numerous occasion. I actual got frustrated as a cycling buddy is riding an old Cannondale aluminum frame and no noise from his bike.

Sorry I was naughty, but that's a good one. Year ago I have sent the frameset for the corrosion via the bike shop I bought the frame and I thought they declined it,because Specialized and the bike shop had some issue with each other and that is the reason I took a day of from work to take itself to Stellenbosch. I honestly forgot to tell them about the squeak of the frameset and it did only cross my mind now that we talking about the after effects of the corrosion taking place on both side of the seat stay by the lugs. The frame still made a noise and all time I was thinking the sound came from the crank or from the set post.

Hmmmm I see we're still stuck on my about turn on the venge. This thread has served as part of my due diligence. I've been looking around for a while and had my arm twisted on the venge. Naturally the dealers said one thing and non dealers said another.

YEs I researched other brands too and spoke to owners who have had frames warranteed. The anecdotal evidence seems to suggest that one brand in particular is very difficult to deal with in terms of warranty. Should that brand even be having as many claims as ex owners and ex dealers claim? Maybe there's sour grapes but when you want to spend hard earned savings on a new frame surely you want to stack the odds in your favor and buy from people who look at a potential issue with objectivity? Hence I am where I am and not buying the venge. Simple really. Not even sure why this keeps coming up. There will be others reading this thread and thinking " ya I don't want to have a hassle with a warranty maybe I'll look at something else". Human nature. Move to a place of less stress.

The overwhelming majority or argument around warranty on the hub seems to be in favor of the manufacturers. Seems brand defending is a popular activity which is a bit strange because unless people are being paid to defend those brands I would expect some objectivity. The report posted reveals no reason to reject warranty except on paint grounds and in that case the frame would likely have just been repaired anyway. Yet there's a potential structural fault developing and developing within the warranty period and supposedly objective disinterested parties can do nothing better than to defend a brand? Wow, so much for community supporting each other to fight the good fight . Skinny himself paints the scenario where the frame could have been assembled with defective dropouts but then blames the op for not pointing it out?!!! Come on! What's the bigger issue here? A defective product or the OPs lack of drive to sort out a warranty timeously.

It pretty sad that people have to bash people to defend a brand. We'll forever be stuck with sub standard goods at high prices if this is the path we' re on.

If the OP came on here with a JRA and frame snapped I'd be pretty suspicious as I don't believe in JRA. But this oke seems to be pretty diligent and probably thought nothing of the little bubble at first . - I have an old pinarello with a little bubble in the paint. It never got worse so I've never bothered it again. I'm of the opinion the OP behavior is reasons of any consumer so why the crucifixion ?

Is the brand more important than a community supporting a fellow member with reasonable considered thought on ways forward?

Ok, please stop telling me and other people to "stop doing stuff" if we say stuff you don't like, tough, but I am not going to stop because you told me too.

See, I actually did order and did pay for a new Sworks Tarmac, I then had a fight with a Concept Store about some some shoes. I cancelled my order, properly, and bought a C60. I have also not set foot back in a Spez shop again or bought any Spez things for the last year. ( I lie, I bought a new PreVail, awesome helmet!) but I am NOT a fan of the brand! I actually dislike them very much. If you have the time go read some concept store threads, usually I'm not very complimentary of them, except Ebens in the Westrand, but that's because of him not Spez.....

The difference is, I don't let my like or dislike for a brand cloud my judgement on a matter like this.

So honestly, trying to debate this point has become frivolous as its more about who's opinion is right.

If you don't want to buy a Spez because of this that's your choice, you will enjoy the V1R just as much, and I'm sure Mark will do you a good deal too!

This thread has made for some interesting reading with some scientific and technical discussions on corrosion and other related topics.

This is all just academic as nothing changes the fact that

1. The frame is out of warranty

2. The warranty specifically excludes corrosion.

Further to this whole thing, the OP was happy with the warranty conditions when he bought the frame, why is he now complaining?

If he wasn't happy with the warranty conditions, then he shouldn't have bought the frame. If he didn't know the warranty conditions, he should either kick himself for not doing the proper research or kick the salesman at the bike shop for failing to inform him of the warranty conditions.

You cannot blame Specialized or accuse them of bad service. Actually their service was quite good. They still took the trouble to check the frame over, despite it being out of warranty and they still provided a timeous response and report. The fact that the OP didn't get his desired outcome, doesn't mean the service is bad.

When buying a Carbon Fibre frame the exclusion of corrosion in the warranty conditions would not have bothered me.

you're pretty far off the mark here since we're not debating love for a brand but whether or not the OP got a fair deal on his warranty claim. Quite willing to leave brand name out of the debate it repairs your feelings

The OP reminds me of Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man asking Charlie if he can go to KMart to buy his shorts. Over and over and over and over and over again.

Seriously Dude - let it rest now.

You are not the first who have tried to put an end to this thread. Clearly you are not feeling the distinct disappointment of the loss of R23000 frame that in no way he could predict what serious issues lay under the flaking paint.

Oh, add to that, not even the specialised guys who were on the hunt for a squeak detected the issue, nor made any recommendations to him of the possible imminent failure of his frame which as it states in the warranty doc, is their responsibility to check when in their possession.

I asked this question a few pages back. Has the bike ever been sent to a Specialised agent before claiming? If so, did they see the bubbles and what did they say?

Oh, and it was socks. "Gotta go to K-Mart, get some socks."

From Spaz site:

"ALL SPECIALIZED BICYCLES AND FRAMESETS SHOULD BE PERIODICALLY CHECKED BY AN AUTHORISED SPECIALIZED DEALER for indicators of stress and/or potential failure, including cracks, deformation, corrosion, paint peeling, dents, and any other indicators of potential problems, inappropriate use, or abuse."

The only reason i take my anthem back to the shop i purchased from (brand new) ...and insist on an invoice to prove they have serviced the bike at regular intervals...and they are aware of my weight...to verify that there is no weight restrictions for any of the anthem components...and with the info i have since the di2 story...will not alter or upgrade any components be it wheels group set etc unless it is carried out and cleared by the same bike shop....just in case [emoji57]

In fact if i hear a squeak on the frame...i make them aware of it...just in case...how they respond to the information is up to them...so long as they are aware of it.

And i have informed my insurance company about the rumors about 10 speed being doscontinued...just in case [emoji57]

Lol

Squeaks are often difficult to find.

You need to follow a process of elimination by checking the things you can fix.

Ask Specialized if they think the lugs could be the cause....

Crank an bb you seem to have had checked already (did they check tighten the chain ring bolts)?

Seat post, seat post clamp and seat rails, clean and lube with the correct lube (carbon paste for the seat post)

Pedals, remove clean axle threads, lube threads slightly and refit. Rotate pedals and check they are rotating easy and smoothly. Clean cleats and the contact points on your shoes and pedals, lube the cleats and contact points with a bit of Teflon spray (spray n cook).

Handle bar clamp, remove, clean clamp inside and bar area, check for signs of a crack, refit using the correct torque and tightening sequence.

Note: be careful when tightening bolts especially on carbon parts, do not over tighten and use a torque wrench if u are not sure how much is to much.

Tight is tight and too tight is forked

EDIT: On my bikes the pedal and shoe interface cause 99.9% of the squeaks. Time ATAC pedals.
