Garmin honoured their warranty :-)

I've had some bad luck with my Garmins, but they have always given me awesome support. Most recently I managed to destroy my 810 and they replaced it at a nominal charge the next day.

Garmins warranty in my experience is second to none in SA. They are fantastic.

Perhaps only 2nd to Leatherman ... they sent me a newer version Wave when I sent mine in for a repair 10 years after I bought it. For free.

But I love my Garmins and their support have treated me well in the past.

Had a Garmin VIRB elite for 2 weeks and plugged it in to charge. Afterwards when i turned it on, there was just a constant beeping sound and the device didn't turn on. Took the device to Garmin Joburg and they replaced it with my lunch break.

Very good service from Garmin

American companies with American mentality!!

I have also had good warranty claims with both products. My wave 2 was quite a few years old and in fact I even bought it in the states. Broke the common screw driver, went to cape union mart and told them that I didn't get it from them or even in the country. They said no problem at all as the warranty states you don't need proof of purchase(not that I checked that out). I said i'm happy if they just replace the broken bit and a few weeks later they called to say a new wave 2 was waiting for me. Free of Charge, even courier charges. Only down side was I had my name laser etched onto the handle so needed to get that re done.

Its actually how it should work but we all so used to fighting about warranties that when it goes like this we surprised.

My edge 705 keeps randomly switching off... contacted them, no help, I mean its only 8 years old and done 43 000km.

Wont even trade in for an edge 25. :P

Aaahhhhh....That is what happens if you don't take out the extended warranty....   :w00t:

Please be honest, did you not maybe swim deeper than 50m?

Is it even possible to swim deeper than 50m's without scuba gear?

But no, I was surfing with my 7 year old so we didn't go deeper than where I could stand and help him.

So great to see that the service I got wasn't a once off and that it wasn't just the one store either, looks like in general in SA the service is great.  Well done Garmin!

Worldwide Garmin service is beyond the norm. I had a Garmin with SA maps when I moved here I asked if they could change the maps, the guy stroked his chin and said go have a coffee and I'll see you in 30 minutes, when I came back he had changed the maps but also gave me a card I could use with all my saved SA destinations, Compliments of Garmin.

I also had a very old Etrex device which went on the blink in SA, I took it to Garmin to see if they could fix it, the guy said he will look, come back tomorrow.

When I went back he looked soulfully at me and said when he opened the case it broke and the device was ruined, ...........then before I burst into tears he chuckled reached under the table and gave me a brand new one - Compliments of Garmin.

I will only ever buy Garmin and I have a number of devices.

There are a lot of companies who can learn a few things from Garmin's attitude to customer service and warranties ..... sadly few will bother!.

I use a Garmin Edge 500 and absolutely loved the thing, gives me all the data I need. It's 16 months old, so just out of the 12 month warranty period. Started to under read distance and thus also speed, so took it in to Nav. They factory reset the thing, but no change. Tested it and "Sorry, unit is faulty. It is out of warranty, so best we can offer is a new replacement with full new warranty for R1790" (approx half the price I paid for the unit).

AS much as I like the idea of a "trade-in" discount, the unit went faulty due to no abuse other than normal use. Is it then "normal" for the unit to "go faulty" in such a short time? Having paid R3600 for the unit, should I not expect the thing to last longer than a year before becoming terminal?

Love my Garmin but ... saddened?

Too high expectations?

Half price on a new unit outside of warranty? Where else you gonna get a deal like that?
