Is this gap correct? Cane Creek headset

Ok, so I was servicing my headset. Found a lot of gunk in it. Bottom bearing actually needs replacing but cleaned and it is ok for now.

However on assembly, I saw a gap between lower bearing and top of fork crown. The bearing is inserted the right way up (chamfered edge at the top against the bearing race). So I think this causes the gap at the bottom of the headset when the fork is fully inserted. In all likely a good place for gunk to enter.

The bike was built by a reputable LBS and I would only assume that they used all the correct parts of the headset as from Cane Creek.

Any comment on this?

no that does not look right to me , pretty sure the bearing needs to sit flush on the crown race

But if there are no marks on the steerer or no stiffness in the headset you should be okay

good luck tho

That gap seems excessive  will cause a lot of gunk going in there, Is that the crown race that came with the headset, or the one from the previous headset ?

As far as I am aware, it should sit flush on your crown race which should sit flush on the fork crown...

 agreed

this is a bike I bought from a LBS that was built up for me, so all new parts. I assumed that they used the proper parts. I contacted Cane CReek and they said the crown race does not look like theirs. Will take it up with LBS

Bicycle shop tech's were probably too lazy to remove the old crown race... That's why I stress on the fact that if you know how to use tools, then fix your own bike...  So much less hassles... And you'll probably do a better job too...

Last week we had a bike with two crown races installed on top of each other. This morning a bike had a crown race being used as a headset spacer under the stem.

Kid you not.

Yup. Seen both.

Right up there with that mark that waterpump pliers leave on "things I didn't have the tool for".

I normally do my own. Hence servicing the headset. But this was a new bike and new fork. Anyway **** happens. Will get correct race and new bottom bearing.

Now to service the pivots....

We have a special tool which fits under the crown race and allows you to tap it up - eliminating those dreaded screwdriver chips
