Stans Crest vs Arch

I have a set of Stans Arch wheels with Hope hubs

I am looking at passing these on to my son and building up a new set for myself.

Do I go with the Archex again as they have been bullet proof or with the slightly lighter Stans Crest rims again with a set of Hope hubs

I weigh around 96kg and do most of my riding around Tokai/Silvermine area with visits to the country from time to time and ride between 4-6 hrs per week

Any advice

The default answer here is:

96kg. And Crests?

I weigh more than 20kg's less. And I have both. The Arch EX is the better wheel. Full stop.

Build the Crests up for your son. He will eventually decide on the options for your old age home. Either the one where they change your diaper 3 times a day or the one where they change it once in three days.

I'd stay Arch EX or even go Flow. I am just under your weight and I wouildn't flirt with Crests if I had the choice. I remember reading somewhere that the recommended weight was around a 90kg rider. Add a steak the night before and a bottle or two and you're over 100, really pushing it. My 5cw.

My son weighs 82 kg so looks like consensus is another set of archex

Will see if some end of range bargains present themselves before the new range of stans arrives

In my opinion it wouldnt be worth looking at end of the range bargains. The rims are far from the most expensive part of the build and getting old bargains means getting the narrower rims.

Arch up until now have just been reinforced crests so they were no wider than light skinny xc wheels.

The new Stans are a completely different design with much wider rims which carries a definite benefit.

Give your son the Arches and get yourself the new Flows. 29mm internal width vs 25mm, and lighter than current versions. Or wait for the new Arch (25mm)

Don't touch the Crests.

+1

wait for the new Arch EX

Stay away from  the Crest (at your weight (and mine))

I average the wrong side of 80 kg's and have used Crests my 'race' bikes, seen plenty of action at the likes of Sabie, Barberton, various other mtb events. no problems, and I tend to cane it downhill.
