Mavic Ksyrium Elite - Waste of money

Bought a 2015 Mavic Ksyrium Elite wheelset brand new - after less than 3000km rear rim has a developed a crack inline with a spoke hole.

When googling "Ksyrium Crack" (which I should have done before buying this rubbish - kicking myself) I get hundreds of pictures with exactly the same crack!

Sent it back to suppliers for warranty repair/replacement - had it for two weeks, they are still "assessing". I am disappointed that such a sub standard product is sold, and then the suppliers take their time to even get back to me if they are going to honour the warrantee.

So rather buy something else if you were thinking of Mavic Ksyriums.

On the contrary I have always found Kysiriums to be of the better aluminium wheels. My previous set was almost 10 years old and only had bearings replaced. Must be an issue with new models.

Could be, they changed the way the spoke nipples attach to the rims, thread cut directly into the rims with the nipples threaded, Mavic calls it some fancy name, probably weakened the overall structure. - Anyway, I am without wheels for two weeks now and do not have high hopes for longevity after the wheel is repaired judging by results from google...

Hi Roelf,

I always thought that they were good wheels. Hope that I am not wrong. I on the other hand have a set of Aksiums that are only 3 years old and are already buggered. I have cracks all round the rim. Very fine but there.

Good luck with your claim,

Sarge

I had the same issue with some 2010 Ksyrium Elites - back wheel, but only after 25000 km / 2 years, so I couldn't really complain.  A little disappointing though.  It does seem reasonably common - I have friends who've had the same problem.

The nipple design was basically the same in 2010 by the way - thread on both sides.  One side threads into the rim and the other onto the spoke.  The size may have changed a bit though.

Hope the suppliers sort you out.

Whilst it may be a fairly common issue, are you operating the wheel within the limits? these wheels (correct me if I'm wrong) have a weight limit of 85/90kg so if you are close to this weight then they will fatigue crack a lot sooner than if I were to ride the wheels, (I weigh +-70kg).

I have never been a huge fan of Mavic wheels, but they are not a bad product if operated within limits...

I am 85Kg + bike with full bottles 15Kg = 100Kg, wheels are rated for 120Kg, so should still be OK

From their website for Ksyrium Elite:

INTENDED USE

ASTM CATEGORY 2 : road and offroad with jumps less than 15cm

For a longer longevity of the wheel, Mavic recommends that the total weight supported by the wheels doesn't exceed 120kg, bike included

I have a set for sale and found tem to be brilliant, This is my third set and sold bikes with them on previously...

I always had faith in them and will still as these were always the bulletproof lightweight choice...

Maybe just a bad batch? As with many other things in this world?

Hi Roelof

Sorry to hear that you have had problems with your wheel after so little riding time.We have received the wheel in our service centre only on 3 May (however we were closed on Wed - public holiday) as well as Friday so this may have extended the time to look at your wheel.) While there were cracking issues on the previous version (Elite S) these wheels have been beefed up for the 2016 model (your version) and the wheels have increased their rider weight limit from 100kg to 120kg. At present this is the first wheel of this generation that has cracked (in South Africa) and have escalated this with head office in France.

Your wheel will most definitely be repaired under warranty to original factory specification.

Please feel free to contact the Mavic Service Centre on 021 461 6252 for more information on your repair (we only have the store contact on your wheel return)

Best Regards

Gavin

I have had that happen 3 times over the last few years.

Twice under warranty, and once I paid for myself.

Each time I was given a loan wheel so that I could keep rolling, so I wasn't too traumatized.

It did take several weeks as they didn't have stock of rims and spokes, which I thought was weird.
