Word on the street is that he wanted a 29'er, even cried in the LBS for one ..... but they refused to sell one to him till he could provide a up to date and valid man card :P

I could just buy one privately I suppose... actually I did. Its got 23mm tyres and drop bars.

Hi guys

We are going to check out Tokai this weekend for the first time since it opened (and my first time ever!) Which trails would you recommend are suitable for a novice? I am strong on climbs but still a beginner when it comes to mtb.

Thanks so much

Welcome to Tokai.

Do most of them - the ones to stay away from as a novice is all the DH lines 0 1 2 and 3 and avoid Cobra if you lack confidence.

Bridle (Switchbacks) is doable but quite a bit out the way but my favourite.

If you can, try and latch onto someone who knows the trails when you get going and follow them around. That way you won't get lost. Quite a few people, even those who knew the area before the trees were felled, get a bit confused.

Please also bear in mind that bar the jeep track, all the single track at Tokai requires skill on a bike to negotiate. Best thing you can do if you aren't too proficient yet is a skills course with eg. Chris Nixon/Joanna Dobinson/Julian Louw/Daniel Dobinson. There are others who offer courses too.

I enjoy going up (Tokai is all uphill for the first few km), then pedalling up Boulders, and dropping into the DH1 onto the AM trail, then going back up, back into Boulders and then back down Boulders, then up the road on the left to do the Bridal Path, before going back up to do the Snake trails, then the road to the top of the big berm and smashing all the way down home.   Should be in the region of 23km of riding or so.

Also keen to ride Tokai for first time tomorrow ... prefer the more tech trails ... from slummies .

Any locals riding , wouldn't mind joining ...

Just ask for directions from a local and you will soon have a guide,

If you are nervous on singletrack then stick to the following -

Boulders (up and down)

Boomslang

Lizard

Vasbyt

They can all be enjoyed at any speed and don't have any unavoidable obstacles.

Trail map can be found here -

Emergency phone number is handy to have - 071 424 4712

Enjoy your ride
