From about ZAR1,399 (Comp) to R1.9k (Expert) To R3k (Pro) to RWTF (s-works).

I found the Comp/Expert perfectly adequate (ti rails, not carbon)

Pretty terrified about doing this race. Got a solo entry tossed my way and was too dumb to say no. Haven't done a properly long race before but looking forward to testing my mettle. Interested to see how far I get. Toughness of the Desert Dash in relation to other races? If a comparison can even be made?

Terrified? You should be! I'm scared sh1itless!!

Give us an indication of what races you have already done?

The normal ultra's don't count as that would only be a warm-up.

It's tougher than the Baviaans - waaayyy tougher, the only thing it compares to is the 36One.

You can have the right saddle an bibs coming out of your ears, but as I have experienced a few times, if your head isn't screwed on right, you're going nowhere. Sitting in the middle of the desert, watching all the cars and riders going by, is the crappest feeling there is.

So obviously strongest guy does 2? (With the two compulsory stages)

I would put the strongest rider on 3 and 2nd strongest on 2, even though it is a 100km non-stop ride, but stage 3 is a special bastard, even for team riders...

So I did a nice long ride this weekend.

Now I'm sitting with ischial bursitis on the left side. All the Docs want to aspirate and inject with cortisone. I'm too scared for the possible side effects, so I'm trying to just wait it out, and hope it doesn't flare up again.

If it is big enough to have to aspirated , it might take quite a while to sort out by itself.

You'll also be of the bike, because it will not heal while your continue to ride.

The draining and Cortisone is not such a big issue.

It will drastically shorten the recovery time.

Cortisone side effected  becomes relevant with continues use. Once of injection in a  bursa is not a problem.

I had a bursitis as big as cricket ball on my elbow once as result of the rubbing and irritation of the bursa because of elbow pads.

Doctor drained about 70ml out of that bugger.

There is a bursa ('sack' with a tiny volume of fluid) over the sitting bone to reduce friction. It is now inflamed, so it swells up and gets filled with lots of fluid.

I should probably have it aspirated, but the cortisone could cause atropy (wasting) of the surrounding tissue. The last thing I want is atrophy in that area.

I'm sitting this week out - will try and run a bit, but thats it. I was supposed to do Satellite on the weekend; but thats not happening.

Been building up with longer rides 4hr+ on weekends but hasn't helped that I was man-down with a stomach virus over the weekend. Hoping it clears soon as I want to try and push a few 6-7hr training rides over the next couple of weeks.

Like I said, nothing long at all and nothing that would indicate I can finish this but will give it my best shot.
