I spent a few hours on the R317 separating teams.

The general consensus seemed to be that none of them minded.

while you are here,

10000000000000000% Kudos to you and the rest of the team, you guys are Legends, trying you best to keeping this event and riders safe. Always amaze myself at the work you guys do for us as cyclists.

They could have an extra 5-10 Marshalls on bikes warning teams not to do that, radio in warnings given and 3 warnings and you get DQ. They wouldn't get everyone but it would be a hell of a lot better. Maybe a bit extreme but if there are no repercussions people don't follow rules these days.

Ok now that the dust has settled we can get to the nitty gritty.

How do you guys feel about teams wheel sucking each other.

Not dropped riders catching a little lift, but when team 225 catches 223 and 224 (as an example), and they then suck wheel for 50km, is this ok?

50km?

We had the UCT youngsters (our minute men that we caught after 35 minutes) and the PCC guys riding on our wheels for 80kms. Super dodgy. Go past, or drop off. The rules are clear.

Are they going to win the race?

Nope.... therefore no harm, no foul.

If you don't like them wheel sucking you, either up the pace till it becomes uncomfortable for them, or drop the pace so much that they must come past (and then it is your turn to wheel suck them.  :whistling:  )

We had a few teams sitting on our wheels on the stretch from Robertson to the 2nd Stop. We just kept our pace, did not bother us at all, as long as they did not push into our grupetto. And then there were sections where we sat on other teams wheels. It is just the nature of the beast for us backmarkers.

When 2nd, 3rd and 4th are separated by less than 30 seconds it certainly does become an issue.

You clearly haven't been in a racing team, bleeding from orifices you didn't know you had if your advice is to simply "up the pace". No matter how hard you try, they are always going to get the free ride.

I could see the race referee throwing up her hands with annoyance on the last section. ASG, ourselves and one of the Coronation teams were trying to race, doing the correct thing of dropping back if passed, but all the other back markers were just sitting in, enjoying the shelter from the wind. Eventually we decided to sit in too - and wait for the hills...

We got caught by a massive peleton of teams just before the bottom of Tradouw, we jumped on the back as did not want to lose out on teams sucking wheel. By the time we got to the climb, it split up with Coro boys and ASG hammering off and us dropping the other teams that had caught us.

Other than that we pretty much hammered along in our paceline on our ace the rest of the day, the teams behind us sucked wheel, we did not care too much, except when one team decided to send riders into the paceline to disrupt the paceline and slow us down on purpose. (would get to the front and pull brakes and not pull over). This earnt them some foul language and he even asked why were upset.  :cursing:  Shame, their kit was kinda ***, maybe had kit envy. The kind of kit you dont even take home from Swellendam.

What does get annoying is when you are smashing your paceline and the teams behind send 2 or 3 riders, which come from some euro conti teams and up the pace every single rotation while their riders sit on the back of the whole peloton sucking wheel and giving a surprised look when you ask them to join the paceline at the front.

We had some teams offer to do turns with us, which we didnt mind as we are not d1cks.

There is always that awkward 10km after stop 2 when you start with teams that are near your speed or sort of, then you take a few rollers to see who has the legs. We were on our own picking up stragglers (Read Patch) till the end.

Forgot to activate the "Comic Sans" font.  And it is wayyyyyy too easy winding you serious racer type okes up.  :whistling:

OK, I'm outta here, gonna rest my weary, non racing, post DC legs a bit more on the couch with a frosty in my hand.

Later, peeps.

the team who finished up 3rd in the Ladies competition have an issue with the other ladies teams drafting the mens teams.

there are just too many teams taking part in the event for them to impose rules that were written 20 years ago. that being said - for the 'racing teams' the race ref should have given the teams 30 seconds to back off or be DQ'ed - if she was throwing up her hands in annoyance then she must of been observing what was going on for sufficient enough time to get annoyed - enforce the rules FGS - they get paid to ref the event.
