Best new MTB in SA for 60K?

If you'd asked me a year ago, I'd have had completely different answers. Sadly, due to the USD being what it is at the moment, the options are more limited, but not any less good - it just removes a couple of the boutique carbon options like the Evil & Santa Cruz etc.

Giant Trance Advanced

Spez Stumpjumper

Spez Camber (more XC focussed - with a bigger fork it could be a trail shredder, but then Stumpy)

Niner WFO or RIP9

PYGA 110/stage at a stretch

Cannondale Habit

Scott Genius 650 / 650plus

Banshee Spitfire / Prime / Phantom

Transition Smuggler

Kona Process 134

Would be hard pressed to pick any of the above at the drop of a hat though.

Good luck trying to build up a Spitty for under 60k maybe with base model equipment you might just get there

Definitely! I wouldn't recommend the instinct though - a bit too xc biased. Altitude is on the other end of the spectrum and a solid all mountain bike, so may be a bit too much for what he's looking for. Thunderbolt is a BRILLIANT option.

Erm. I've ridden an Instinct. Fitted with a dropper for me it's the perfect trail weapon. Martin had one and we rode Paarl one day. I was on my DH bike and I wasn't exactly riding away from him on his instinct.

I'd put it right up there with a Spec Enduro.

To be fair I doubt you'd be able to get the one I was on for 60k

A friend ( non hubber) is looking at getting a well deserved new bike, he rides mainly trail and the occasional stage event, he's doing Berg&Bush again this year ...

His budget is around the 60K mark....

Opinions? Suggestions?

The PYGA dealers in Cape Town (Bree Street) currently have a 110 build in their window for just under R60k.  If memory serves it's a Revelation, Spank, Reverb, XT, GX build with Kore finishing touches.

Reckon it's a well balanced build.

Crap. I was thinking of the Element. My bad...

Pretty sure you could build my Pyga OneTwenty for under 60k with a little shopping from CRC as well and NOT have to "settle" for a Revelation.

Loving this bike and riding it pretty damn hard. I can tell it is a little lacking in the bigger, steeper rock gardens, but hey, it wasn't exactly designed with those in mind either ;)

Da Bomb Advanced rims on their own hubs are a great wheelset as well and you can pick up a Manitou Mattok Pro fork from CRC for like 10k landed...Add that to the 22 or so for frame and fork when R3900 for XT 1x11 upgrade kit from Chris Willemse and you're getting an almost finished build ;)

May have forgotten some stuff, but what about something like the pic below:

Forgot the BB but they're cheap ... my Pyga came with a headset so also left out.

The Banshee Spitfire is a little more than a Pyga frame but you can pick it up for around 28k. Crankset I really go on the cheap :P

My vote is for the Transition Smuggler...Biased I know

I luv mine, everything from Karkloof/Howick Enduros to marathons/stage races/even the JUMA

I built up mine for a little over R60k with some negotiations and deal hunting.

Decent spec (XT, Pike, etc)
