It's a prototype with a completely new shock placement and likely heavily co-designed & developed. So real world race testing after testing in training would be my guess. He didn't like the way that the older niner handled with the front end being that much higher than the 275's (due to the larger wheel & fork)

Have you noticed how high the front end of the prototype is?

O yes, let's forget the 2 punctures he had ... that has certainly no impact on his position yesterday ... must have been the new proto 29er that sucks so much ... :whistling:

Nope. How high was it? I know he likes his front ends low. Not the biggest of riders.

EDIT: Just looked. Slammed stem, and a larger fall (negative rise just sounds WRONG) than on his 275... Head tube seems shorter though.

Guy who races EWS on 650b full time, swings leg over 29'er for first time ever.  Slashes 10 seconds off his 650b time.

That says something.

Don't want to appear cynical but 'slashes 10 seconds' .... really?

Some guys were quicker on a 27.5 then on the 29er but they all showed that when you spent lots of time on a certain wheel size that you get use to it and know how to handle it.

But that's the thing.  That guy spent zero time on 29'ers and his first run on it was 10 seconds quicker than the fastest run on his race bike.

BUt most importantly, that video at least confirmed that serious bike riders all agree that 27.5+ is, for now, not worth investing in if racing is your thing.

Seems the catch 22 for that size is keeping the tires light enough to be rideable but thick enough not to lose all its air at the sight of a pointy edge.  So basically, for racing they aren't a viable option.

Oh, a new wheelsize debate. A bit premature. There are still a few points to be raised in the 26/29 issue....

My wife rides a 650b...and your wife is ALWAYS right.

Anyway, I don't get these comparison things:

Take a 650b, blast a course, set a time.

Take a 29er, blast the same course, compare the time.

If the time is faster, ergo, the 29er is faster.

Completely ignoring the fact that it is human nature to want to be faster, to want to beat your previous time REGARDLESS of the equipment. So if you go out on another bike you instinctively want to beat the time set!

And also ignoring the fact that on your second run, you now enter the course with knowledge of the course. So you know where to go faster.

When I put my bike next to my wife's bike, against the wall, they are exactly the same "fast".

And that was on a serious bit of track the blackest route at BP Wales. Some people are just 29 er riders and some are not...

Then we have Jared Graves who never did better in the EWS than when he was on a 26er....
