Probably under the impression that the 3 km rule applies

UCI rule 2.6.027: "In the case of a duly noted fall, puncture or mechanical incident in the last three kilometers of a road race stage, the rider or riders involved shall be credited with the time of the rider or riders in whose company they were riding at the moment of the accident."

Just shows Sky protected Froome better than BMC and Tinkoff, also love watching Froome at the back of the sprints spinning it up at 160 cadence [emoji23][emoji23]

 

If Bertie and Porte had hammered like froome there would have been no gap, they coasted in.

The Finish:

The ski station summit finish of 6.4km at 6.5% sounds reasonable but it’s got a steady gradient of 8-10% for most of the way and then a flatter section as they approach the village of Vaujany. The early steep part is hard work, it twists with a few hairpins and if the road is wide it’s irregular with a constantly changing gradient, this might be a ski station road but it feels like an old path rather than a route engineered to take buses and trucks up to the top. The road flattens out as they enter the village but then there’s a hairpin bend and it rises at 7% for the final 300m.

This is going to be a super hard stage. Because it's short (140km) and very lumpy, they'll be going full taps from the gun.

Ja for sure :thumbup: . These shorter lumpy stages usually provide the best racing.

 

The really big mountain stages in the TDF (200+ km over a few massive passes) often become a bit of a procession until the last few kay's of the final climb. The riders just go into their shells to conserve energy as much as possible.

 

But these shorter mountain stages produce the fireworks because many riders feel they have a chance at glory and so they hammer from the gun, with every bump in the road becoming a hill sprint.

 

These are the days that the guys in the grupetto really fear. These are the worst days for them to try and stay inside the cut-off time due to the high speed racing up-front.
