Turning an iPhone 5 into a bike computer, how is it done?

I vaguely remember somebody saying on Le Hub  that they were able to turn their iPhone 5 into a bike computer. I like this idea as I'm thinking of saving up for a new phone, and as tempting as a Garmin Edge 810 or Polar V650 would be, I would rather spend that money on a new phone.

Are there any apps needed for this kind of thing, and which would be the best apps or app to download? I'm totally clueless about this.

Edit: I see on their site, Sportsmans Warehouse have this Tigra Bike Phone Console.

I assume it would be something to consider?

I would also be interested in running the 5 as a proper gps and computer, Yes the Garmin/polar is nice to have, I agree, but seeing that the phone already has all the required interfaces, it should be possible

I would like to use the phone as a turn by turn nav system, as well as run strava etc for logging.

Thinking of:Google maps - use as gps and turn by turn nav, includes favorites management

Strava - well if it didn't happen on Strava, it didn't happen at all

Battery life might become a problem so might have to look at a powerbank of sorts..

I run an old iphone 4S as a bike computer. linked to strava and using the bluetooth to connect to a TomTom heart rate strap. Works great, except being an old phone the battery is a bit of an issue.

Yip, was wishing I had a Pocpac for yesterday's ride at Karkloof, as it looked like it was going to rain, so I left my phone in the car. Ride happened, but no Strava recording :cursing:

I think a lot of us start out by using our phones as gps devices, however one quickly learns (as shaper has pointed out) that your battery runs down very quickly. The final straw for me was riding a 40km funride last year, got to the end and when i checked my phone to see my time it was dead! Not only had i lost my ride data but i also couldn't use my phone to hook up with some buddies. Now use a garmin edge25.

Sell your i phone ( 5 still fetches a good price)

Buy a bike computer.

Tah-dah !

Got this nifty little Cateye, but needing something with a bit more features - selling the phone for something like that could work.

Not a bad idea..... seeing that the 5 is used solely for strava... Hmmm

So to the classifieds it is...  :whistling:
