Rock Shox SID sticky

Must say I am not impressed with the brand...

I have the fork now for about 6 months.

A month ago I saw the dust seals is not flush with the lowers anymory. So I took the fork in to my local LBS to have it checked.

I Asked that they sommer replace the dust seals.

Went to go fetch the fork the next day. They did not replace the dust seals as they said the seals were fine still.

Somehow the fork was now an 80mm fork. When I gave it in, it was a 100mm. So they took it back into the workshop and I fetched it later the afternoon. It was now a 100mm again. Iknow the fork is adjustable via the tokens.

Anyway, the fork felt awsome the first couple of rides. But since last weekend, not so much.

It is really sticky. I checked online for advice and people suggested adjusting the rebound, putting some sort of lube on the stancions etc. Seems to be a known issue with this fork....

Is there anyone here that has some solid advice other than telling me a should have bought a Fox?

first Don't buy fox

Next don't go back to that shop ever....The fork has to get an airshaft assembly for travel adjust , the tokens are for the dampening ramp-up  so they adjusted your travel some diy way which is not good for the fork

The sticky ness can be because they used common suspension fluid rather than the proper weight for the sid , the seals also have to get specific grease and not common K@K

If you can't replace the oil yourself , Take it to somewhere that specializes in this

Epic Sports -ask for OB  Torq zone - everyone is qualified

The fork is awesome just needs to handled by a mechanic who knows what he id doing

Sounds like the lbs cocking up a maintemance job rather than Mr Sid; likely their most tested and hammered shock they have for cross country riding.

Agree with Ba, take it to someone who else before you properly damage the internals

Nothing wrong with either Fox or Rockshox and your Sid is a really good fork.....in this case you were let down by the guy in the workshop.

Also, don't waste money buying stuff to spray on the stanchions. If the fork became sticky so soon after a service then that 'mechanic' stuffed up somewhere so rather take it elsewhere and get the real problem fixed.

My Reba did the same - the stickyness that is (Reba and SID basically have same internals).

Had it serviced and was perfectly fine afterwards.

Next service it went to a different shop - thought I'd try someone else - and stickyness came back.

Nothing wrong with your SID. Take it to another shop to have it sorted.

Forks and shocks need someone who knows what they're doing. They're easy to get right, but will give you endless and very expensive issues if the instructions aren't followed properly.

Sounds to me like the fork is stuck down and the wrong grease has been used in the spring. You may also have a failed negative spring seal, which is what would have caused the seal to pop out in the first place.

Update: Took the fork in to Torq Zone this morning. Got a text 4 hours later saying the fork is done. Phoned them, asked the tech why it was sticky?

Apparantly at least more than one type of oil in the fork/wrong type of oil in the fork and oil in the wrong places.

So, will be fetching the fork on Thursday and riding it this weekend.

If it behaves, I will give Torq Zone a thumbs up.

Thanks for the suggestions gents.

Agree with the other hubbers, take it to someone who knows how to service a fork.

I have heard a few times that all the parts are fine inside. What is the point of a service if you don't replace the parts that need to be replaced? Then on top of that you put the wrong oil? R500 wasted.

What is the correct grease to use? I am currently rebuilding my SID XX WC and the Rockshox manual does not specify the grease spec

Got the fork back. Seems ok. Will ride it tomorrow.

Must say, impressed with the detail written on the jobcard I received at Torq Zone.

I will post a snippet of it later...

you have done the right thing taking it to someone that knows what they are doing

sid is one of the best forks out there and defn one of the lightest

I have a sid on my hardtail aswell as on my softail and had it on my previous 2 bikes as well

I cannot fault it at all

I did however have the same bad experience on my second one taking it to a mechanic that knew nothing

in the meanwhile I have learnt to do it myself and have not had any problems again

SRAM Butter. Slick Honey will also work, but the SRAM stuff is next level.
