Outside Assistance in IM

I was also given a warning at IMSA 2012 when a friend cycled alongside me at the back of the University. I was on a 16 hour time so I guess they gave me some leeway.

I also helped a fellow competitor with a broken chain in 2014 I think it was, gave him a quicklink and fixed the chain for him (he did not know how). A referee did stop next to us and didn't say anything.

Also remember what 'Oom Paul' said regarding outside assistance from 'official' mechanics, they may hand you stuff and talk you through it but may not do it for you.

Is one entrant helping another entrant considered outside help?

The rule is basically of no outside assistance. The assistance given by the bike mechanic is available to all so is allowed. Assistance by fellow competirors is also allowed.

The rules against outside allowance is that it has to be a level playing field in that that assistance has to be available to all.

Just got a reply by Paul Kaye on FB-Race Officials are allowed to assist. As the official mechanics they are allowed to assist physically, it is similar  to volunteers handing out gels, water etc as opposed to having to get it yourself.

I think there is some grey areas and it looks like IM is becoming a bit of a "your on your own mate but not actually"

With all the rollings starts, outside help (I still believe it is -but it has become more confusing then clear), changing some IM's like UTAH to a 70.3. What next, is my Mom gonna come out and dress me and brush my teeth and hold my hand from 26km?

Outside assistance refers to anybody not falling under official race personal.

No seconding, no pre arranged food and drink hand offs etc.... Race officials, marshalls and anyone employed or officially working under the IM banner is allowed to assist you in their respective field.

A mate who is a bike mechanic cannot help you change a flat or index your gears if you stop in front of them.

Is it really that much of an issue for you that an official bike mechanic is allowed for all and the volunteers who hand out water, gels and coke etc are also assisting as part of the rules.

Am not really understanding your issue if there are rules whether IM, ITU or even local rules for a particular race.  As long as they are adhered to and enforced.

Personally I think the rolling starts is a good idea
