To and from Muizenberg

A shout out to all our commuters in the Southern Pensinsula and Burbs. I just moved employers and now I will be working in Muizenberg. The good people are allowing me to work from home (Melkbosstrand) until the Government and I find a place to live that side, but I do need to come in once or twice a week. Why not by bike?

Now, Chappies route is great of course, but I can imagine the Southern Suburbs, somewhere parallel to the M3 to be a little quicker that side. Can anyone recommend a safe and efficient route?

Thanks in advance.

Bugger that.  I would do Chappies every time.  Least traffic, scenic and you will be as fit as anything.

You are making a good point there. I do however think I need a quicker alternative for those snooze moments. :')

With all the stop and start that you will experience going through the suburbs I am not sure if you would actually save time taking a more direct route.  This is based on what I remember from the Cape Town Traffic to the Peninsula.  You will take a longer route via Chappies but it would be less traffic and very little stopping at traffic lights.  But going in once or twice a week I do not see a problem.

Play around in Strava Route Builder or Map My Ride.

It's about 50km and pretty flat if you use the Milnerton bike lane to Woodstock and then Main Rd all the way to Muizenberg.

Chappies will be quite a detour, but much better in the traffic.

Either way, it will be a slog when the SE pumps.

You're on a roll here. Good points again. I think you might be right. I can count the robots via Chappies on one hand...

Route Builder was new for me. Thanks for the heads up.

Should the SE pump, the way back will be sweet. Haven't had much problems with the SEs on a 6AM way in to Century City.

Thanks guys. Much appreciated.

i live in muizenberg, have commuted to jobs in town before. in the end i settled on using the m5. it's 'not allowed' but the best and safest route in terms of traffic. bit of a problem spot around military road, but you could swap to main before then

Is Main Road difficult to cycle?

from Albert road Woodstock  to

Leisbeek parkway till you are past past Claremont CBD

take bridge over at Bowwood road to Main road through Kenilworth

Take  Aliwal Rd through Chelsea before Wynberg

on to Alphen hill Road to Constantia Main road

then take Spaanshemat River Road to Steenberg Rd past pollsmoor and back to main rd to muizenberg  (or you could do Boyes drive )

its got traffic lights but some of it has cycle paths and its less crazy than Main the whole way

54.9km along this route.

This is the route that I'd recommend too if you're not going via chappies.  Definitely the safest, and very few stop streets or traffic lights compared with the Main Road.

just be warned about the myciti bikelane=>woodstock transition, there's been some bikejacking there at times

.i would maybe gooi a left onto ladies mile at the constantia school instead of going onto spaaschemat. will cut off quite a triangle.

if you go down ladies mile you have to go through blue route on main which is mad traffic and the ride through  spaanschemat river road way is the nicest part of the route :w00t:

and if you follow my route you miss out Wynberg main and Claremont main hence almost no taxis etc :whistling:
