Hi all,

I need to replace my rear hub from my Scott Spark 920, it had the following rear hub, Syncros XR2.5 CL / 12x142mm / RWS Axle made by DT Swiss. I need to replace the hub, so what are my options? I was looking at the Shimano XT or SLX,

http://www.ebay.com/itm/351768429213

Firstly would these work and secondly which one would be the better option? Also if anyone has a recommendation for a different reaplcement hub that would great.

Cheers

Hope. The end.

Alternatively, if you don't want to spend that, the Rapide hubs are reportedly very good, and are very well priced. Also have sealed cartridge bearings rather than Shimano's bearings.

the cheapest Rapide rear hub is R1600, that seems quite pricey? The Shimano XT and SLX hubs are cheaper than that, but I wonder what is the difference in build quality is like?

Way cheaper than rebuilding the wheel again when you find out the XT freehubs are made of cheese. Sealed bearing hubs are also usually convertible between various axle standards, while the Shimanos aren't.

Another option is Bitex - I've built a few wheelsets with them, one set in particular has been doing some pretty serious riding for about 18 months now with no issues.

The Hope hubs are a great replacement option as mentioned by others, but you don't need to get the Pro 4, if you're budget is limited see if you can find Pro 2's somewhere.

The Rapides also sound like a good low cost option. Read somewhere on The Hub that they are a copy of an older model DT Swiss hub, so the design should be good, they just need to prove there strength /quality over time.

As for the options from Shimano, they have their drawbacks such as their bearing system not being as smooth as the sealed bearing options and they might be slightly heavier than the others, but for the most part they are bulletproof and replacement parts are cheap as chips. I would personally go with SLX if I went that way.

Nothing wrong with build quality on SLX and XT hubs. The sealing is better on the XT. But these hubs have cup and cone bearings that require adjustment and greasing typically more often than cartridge bearing hubs. You also need special flat cone spanners in several sizes to adjust them. Very reliable if well maintained but not the lightest.

I have used Novatec rear hub for 18 months, can be from eBay or Aliexpress. Some guys locally also have them. My LBS supplied locally for about R1000 (for front and back hubs). Had no issues. The hub matched the previous hub size which saved me from changing spokes, that is why I chose it.

I have been reading up on these hubs and seems the bearings are not that great? At the moment Im leaning towards the Rapide Ultralight Pro

They are the normal semi sealed cartridge bearings. Pretty cheap and easy to replace.

Most of the hub manufacturers buy in bearings and probably buy in from more than one supplier.  I would rather replace a cheap sealed bearing with something better than search for a Shimano cone any day, or sukkel with a non serviceable freehub.  Novatec make thousands of hubs under various names - good chance that some of the other brands also come from them.

My carbon GT had a GT Hub, eventually I found that this GT hub was made in Malaysia by Salsa Cycling, their products make Novatec look like a massive upgrade. With the sealed bearings, they are mostly cheap. It is your choice when you replace how much you want to spend.

I agree with you on Shimano cones, I don't like them.
