Attempted bikejacking in Tokai

This morning (Sunday, 17 July) at about 07:00, I was riding down Spaanschmacht River Road, headed from Tokai towards Constantia, about 200 m from the Tokai stone chapel - near the parking area for the walking/jogging track.

I noticed a car (an old Peugeot station wagon, brown or cream I think - was pretty dark still) following me, dangerously closely.  He kept this up for a few seconds, and then came around on my right, knocked me off the road with the car, and stopped.  A guy got out the passenger side and started coming towards me.  I wasn't hurt and I was able to turn around and sprint in the other direction.  The car tried to follow, but they stalled and couldn't get it started again.

So, a luck escape for me.  Be careful.

Quick thinking, well done.

Should be some footage on the NPR's in the area...

Do you have a contact or email address who can help with that?

Spent 20 minutes in the police station waiting for somebody to even acknowledge my existence before I left.  I'll try again if I get some more details of the car.

CVWA Constantia Valley Watches Association http://cvwa.org.za/contact/

The 086 000 2669 number is manned by ATD security. If you phone it shortly after an incident like this, with a description of the attackers, they will put out details over the neighbourhood watch radio network and every armed response van and an army of volunteer patrollers will be on the lookout for them. If they find they find the alleged attacker, they will follow them while they get the police to come and arrest them. All you have to do is be available to make a positive identification.

But you can still report the incident. If they can identify the vehicle from video cameras, they will look out for it.

This is good advice. And adding to this, try to find out the neighbourhood watches for the areas through which you ride and put their numbers in your phone. Worst case scenario, you have someone to call that has a vested interest in keeping crime out of their area. They WILL help.

I think this will work country-wide.

Thanks for all of the assistance.  I contacted the Constantia Watch, who found the car on the camera and the number plate too.  They've forwarded details to the police.  They can't share pictures for legal reasons.

They could however confirm that it was a cream coloured Peugeot station wagon with a CA number plate, and that the owner lives nearby.

From my memory it looked something like the car on this link, but cream, and in worse condition:
