Scott Foil 30 vs. Merida Reacto 400 or 5000

Hi all,

Looking for my first aero bike to replace aged road bike for triathlons up to Ironman and weekend group rides and occasional races. I am not a racing snake - current ftp around 190, weight 70kg, good on hills but generally weak power output.

Budget is up to R30k and I've identified 3 options (of course there must be more) from talking to two LBSs.

1. meridaReacto 5000 - full carbon, partial Ultegra for R25k reduced from R35k

2. Merida Reacto 400 - Alu + carbon fork, partial 105 for R14k. Would still spend R25k but include power meter and other bits (aero bars)

3. Scott Foil 30 - full carbon and full 105 groupset. A bit lighter than the Reacto 5000 (8 vs. 8.9kg). Selling for R30k reduced from R36k

Any thoughts or advice? Will try both Reactos on Saturday but cannot try the Scott

Thanks,

Stu

Are you sure about the reacto 5000 weight?

According to me it must be around 8.2kg. Just by replacing the stadard wheels you can get that bike below 8kg. It comes out with a heavy standard wheelset.

The merida reacto has a very soft ride even if you inflate your wheels to 8\ 8.5 psi

Website confirmed. The reacto 5000 is 8.3kg

I would go for the Merida. Better components and better price. Just go for a proper setup on the reacto as they are hard to setup well according to me.

Merida Reacto 5000 is awesome.  Change the wheels when you have some spare cash and drop over half a Kg.  Nothing wrong with the FSA crank either.

Thanks for the great inputs! The Venge is a good option but too big for me. Sounds like the Reacto 5000 is the best option - weight was measured in the LBS so might have been wrong but good to know about the rims for future consideration!

For that kind of money, look at the Silverback Scalera. You should be able to pick up full Ultegra kitted bikes. They are fast, stiff and reasonably light, sub 8kg.  Not the most compliant/comfortable ride, but a real fast super responsive bike.

What size are you?
