Looking at that one can see where lcycling is coming from...

But can one really just only blame PPA, generally speaking they are not the ones organising most of the races? They play more of a facilitating role for organisers?

Seems more to me there are less organisers out there interested in hosting road events (rather opting for mtb'ing etc)

The problem is they are not using some of that 17 million to facilitate organisers hosting events. Get a school to organise the event, marshals, ladies at starts, etc etc

PPA can provide an entry portal, racetec services and that PPA trailer. They may have to spend 20K per event, and the organiser may make money for their charity, but a cycle race happens and its 100k well spent in my view.

Better than R175k rand spent on an asset which is not even theirs or PPA get preferential entry to....

As I said before, they are involved with many charities and that is what it's about for me. Even if they did not have any rides I still think it is a good idea to support them because of that.

Sometimes we tend to get so caught up in "what's in it for me" that we forget about the good we can do for others. On Monday I'll be donating blood despite the killer 72K Elgin MTB that is coming next weekend. I am sure someone else can use that blood better then me on a MTB.

Maybe time for some of the bigger MTB organizations to expand to some road crits/cycle cross events .. I'm sure there enough paved roads on the farms for crits, and definitely enough dirt track for cyclecross.

No cops/ muni fees etc ec

Stupid question - but if I ride this as a non-PPA member... do I have to start riiiiiight at the back? Since I then also don't have PPA seeding any more.

PPA event, PPA seeding.

As it is normaly the last "shakedown / training ride" before the DC, teams that wants to start together must start with the lowest (highest!?) seeded member at the back. So no PPA seeding, hello to starting at the back.

Thats nice if it was a charity, they are not a charity. Also they are not spending the money on charities, they have R17 million in an investment trust.

Here is their mandate from their website:

The main purpose and object of the Association is to promote cycling and the interests of cyclists, with the following ancillary objectives:

(a) to be a representative body for the furtherance of the interests of cyclists;

(b) to promote cycling as a recreational activity, a sport and as a means of transportation;

© to improve conditions for cyclists with particular regard to their safety;

(d) to arrange and organise cycle tours, fun rides and outings;

(e) to co-ordinate cycle tours, fun rides and outings organised by other bodies and to assist them in their efforts;

(f) to establish contact and liaise with and where appropriate affiliate with other organisations having similar or alike interests and objectives.

I also donate blood, but not a week before a race.

It is a lot more expensive and involved to organice a road race.

Not sure if it has changed again, but just one simple little thing like Traffic Control is a huge expense. Every Municipality you go through must be contacted for permission, lots of red tape adhered to, etc. Traffic Officers that does traffic control, must be paid for by the Organiser, and as it is on a Saturday or Sunday, it means OVERTIME rates apply.

You must have 3rd Party Liability in place, an approved Disaster plan, etc etc.

This quickly adds up, and together with all the hoops you must jump through, it is a really big undertaking, not something I ever want to do again or get involved with.

If only we had the largest cycling organisation in the country at our doorstep to under take this mammoth task, nobody said it would be easy. The funds currently being spent on road cycling, is a bit of a joke, seeing that 80% of their funds come from a road event.

If I was tasked with assisting in events, I would create a template for organisers, with all relevant contact information, costs involved etc.

They would have a lot more sympathy if they were broke and I did not have to listen to really expensive radio adverts...

Red Tape and GREED has killed of the smaller funride events. It has become too expensive for the "Kerk Basaar" type funrides to be presented.

Agree that PPA can AND SHOULD, do more to assist with the organising and presenting of road races.

I miss the time when there was two events on one weekend, and it did not cost an arm and a leg to enter.

We had a family entry card, think it was R500 for 5 events, for a family of 4!!

And you could arrive on the morning, stamp the card get the sticker and off you go :D

The MTB events I take part in, PPA ones and others, all have local charities that gain from it.

I have donated blood the day before a ride, it's not that bad, but you do feel slower and you actually are much slower. It's fun.

Your body is better than mine, I am off for about 9 days after my blood giving.

Just imagine if they assisted with those previously 12 more events from the past, thats 12 more charities!

WPCA can proudly say that they have assisted in producing the National u16 Road Race champ for the last 2 years , the Junior Road and TT champ for this year-contributed 3 riders to the RSA junior squad that raced in Europe recently where one of the WP based members won a race. 3 of the current Di Data pro con team grew up racing in the WP Leagues. the 2nd last of 2016 22 ROAD events were completed today. WP pay for traffic services,medical,public liability ins,loos as well as other niceties like music and social media coverage and PRIZE MONEY. they in it for cycling not charity.

Does WPCA get any financial assistance from PPA?

Not sure, did not see a line item in financials about WPCA. They should be though!!

I have seen a track event on Facebook sponsored by them with WPCA.

We love the WPCA races and try support as much as possible when life does not get in the way.

WPCA is just showing it can be done and PPA does not really have any excuse.

Totally agree, very impressed with WPCA events! Just wish some of those PPA cycling funds that are meant to help cycling in WC were spent at events like WPCA...
