I'm just sad. I try not to think of the hundreds of animals, insects, snakes and baby birds in their nests that were killed.

Just try and remember that wild fires are part of nature

I know

Despite such large pieces of land having their indigenous vegetation stripped off to plant pine and gum, which in itself is an ecological disaster, populations of wildlife have adapted to the exotic plantations and ecosystems have developed.  If you go for a night ride or a early morning ride before 5am you will be amazed by all the animals you see.  I have also recently noted indigenous orchids growing under the gums.  A fire just messes things up even more.  The bramble and bugweed will restablish themselves faster than the orchids, ferns and grasses will.

I'm being sentimental, but I'm seriously bummed.

The Shafton fire harvesting operations will start picking up speed  quite rapidly from now on. Please adhere to harvesting and trail closure signs for your own safety. We will update on the active areas as it go's along, but please remember, it's not only affected compartments but also longer shorthaul routes used by 17ton forwarders. Stay safe!

Hi Everyone,

New resident of the Howick area here! Looking forward to getting to know the trails! Any advice on where to begin for a newcomer?

Welcome :)

Best would be to hook up with one of the club rides. Its difficult to suggest a route without knowing your skill level :)

Awesome, thanks. Where can i find more info on the club rides?

Im unsure of my own skill level tbh  fairly new to MTB but many years on BMX prior, a bit of racing and then mostly dirt jumping after that. Quite a few years in between not on any bike at all then got myself my current bike mid 2015. Took part in the Giba gravity Enduro, had a taste of Cascades, Karkloof & St ives trails last year but not much saddle time other than that for last year.
