Helmets and Protective gear.

Why do MTB guys not wear more full face masks or protective gear? I know the Downhil gus do...but why not trail riders?

I mean I know if I pitch up at a normal trail with a fullface helmet, elbow pads, knee pads, gloves, neck brace and a body armor /or compression vest people will ask questions or point and chuckle most likely.

I mean I get the weight and heat thing.... but I've seen some silly little fals that ended up a rider not riding for 6 months.

Look at this.

Full face helmet and neck brace he would be fine more than likely and this seems like such a tame trail.

Edit: Im looking at a Bell Mips 2R as well as a padded compression vest.

Anywhere in Cape Town that stocks the Bell 2R?

Its personal, if you want to wear it, then wear it...stop worrying what other people think...you are the one that has t wear the consequences of your crash..MY 2 cents

I ride with knee pads and sometimes a full face.

A friend rides most ride with a full face and recently acquired a chest protector as well.

Do what you want, why worry about other people!

Good to read..

Which Chest protector did he go for?

Do you wear them while doing trails?

I mean a trail that looks like the video for instance?

He got a 661 chest protector and wears it on all rides.

I tend to overheat so I use the full face very sparingly. However if I know I gonna get into some very knarly stuff then I def use it.

JENSONUSA has some 2r's for VERY good prices. $ 140 or something for the 2r MIPS, which equates to about R 2,400 landed (with duties)

Local options are almost double that.

Took shots to the ribs far too often.

The worst of which had me off the bike for months with 2 cracked ribs.

I don't ride without my vest.

I'm also of the opinion that ALL mountain bikers should wear a fullface.

Regardless of trail, bike or riding discipline. But its simply not practical.

Especially for long rides on hot days. I have one of the lightest fullface helmets but climbing with 900grams strapped to my back is still much harder than a 300 gram halflid on my head.

Which is why I'm continually tempted by the 2R & that new Giro. Must say, the DH certification of the Giro makes it the more attractive option.

After breaking my jaw and a bunch of teeth in Feb (I'm still dealing with complications) on one of the simplest pieces of trail in jhb, I've been considering wearing a full face on every ride. I recently started wearing knee pads on every ride, and also considering light padded vest (Leatt Airfit Lite).

Been looking at the 2R for a while, but I just found this on special.

Worthwhile?

Do helmets attract any additional import duties?

Very worthwhile, but yes a 30% duty on helmets.

Here's the 2R i was alluding to earlier.

FTFY.

I just don't like the way it looks

And that's cool. I don't like peanut butter. It's literally one of the only foods I'll not eat. Unless it's combined in a choc bar or a thai peanut sauce, which I've made many times before.

Point is - it's about personal taste, and everyone is different.

As for it being marginally warmer than a normal half-shell, that's also cool. I wore a Bell Faction helmet for about 2 years, and that was also just fine, even though it only had about 3.4 vents.

I'd far rather wear the Giro than a Met Parachute (new one) cos that's still a full face, and I don't see myself climbing in a full face, no matter how breezy it is.

You're forgetting about shipping charges. @$113 for shipping it's total to $256 = R3.5k excl duties and VAT.

CRC will actually cost you less;

R2.9k "CIF."

I'm heading to UK/EU next month, will check if I can find something somewhere. Also been considering the Bell Super 2R, but I know I probably would end up never using the chinbar. So the Spez Ambush or IXS trail seems like better options for me.

What I'd really like is decent shoulder protection. Had 3 AC ligament injuries, the last fall coming from an overcooked manual - would've been much worse if I still had actual ligaments left after previous surgery.
