Re the 1.5m rule: does it apply to a stop sign or traffic light?

I wonder because if there are 3 cars waiting, and the cyclist passes on the left and goes to the front, the gap wont be 1.5m. When the light turns green, all start moving together, and on a single lane road, the cars will be closer than 1.5 and may not have space to give 1.5m. Either the cyclest has to wait behind the cars at the stop (not overtake left) or the cars must then wait for the cyclist to roll and stay behind till they can pass outside of 1.5m. Which one?

Considering that you're supposed to keep left and pass right I am fairly sure the cyclist should stay behind the cars if they get there first; and If the cyclist gets to the light first, the cars then should stay behind them.

The likelihood of either being enforced is slightly less than zero in my opinion.

Btw it is not a 1,5m law as some think.

It is a 1m law.

The application was for 1,5m and the 1m was passed.

Remember it is only for the Western Cape.

And I think it is working - yah still some boxes out there. (some = many).

This morning coming down Kloof nek, we set the speed camera off but the knobwank behind us wanted us out of the way, even though there was a perfect lane next to us to pass and he physically could not because of the law, at the bottom of hill after finally getting passed us, he sat in traffic as we wheeled past.

Some people just love to rush to sit in traffic.

What does the law state regarding speeding limits for cyclists on roads, do they apply to vehicles only?

I'm asking, really.

Yes. But enforcement practically never happens.

No. Whether a rule applies, and whether said rule is enforced are two separate issues.

Thanks.

Want to determine if we (me included) are also in the wrong when we descent at 60km/h+ down Kloof or any road for that matter.

I was breaking the law. I wish there was a way to get the photo.

Be very hard to prosecute since there is no legal requirement for a bicycle to have a speedometer so how is a cyclist supposed to know what speed they are doing.

Having said that I was warned by police in the US for speeding past a school.

If people got in trouble for speeding on Strava I would worry, there are people doing more than double the speed limit on strava.... @stravawankers on twitter

Aren't bicycles listed in the roads act (or similar) as road users? If so, all road users are mandated to obey the traffic rules. so yeah, bikes exceeding speed limits is a no-no, and you probably could be prosecuted if they wanted to.

also, officials can detain you if they feel like it, whether it's right or wrong. resisting that, and it's a whole new ball-game

all that said, it's only if you get caught, but no need to be a box-ambassador... so let's try and foster good vibes from our side

I think trying to survive trumps that....

Speed limit applies to all vehicles and bicycle is legally classified as a vehicle. One of my pet peeves is when a car wants to pass me but I am on the speed limit and there is a car in front of me that I am cathing up to. Btw the speed limit on the whole of Chapmans Peak (HB beach to Noordhoek common) is 40km/h. Do you adhere?
