Cape Town to Clanwilliam

As promised an alternative route to Clanwilliam, I just did it in reverse. Clanwilliam to Kaleo was dirt road, from Kaleo to Prince Alfred Hamlet was gravel & tar road (always had the option to swing off the tar to ride on the gravel next to the road until cars passed by), then from Prince Alfred Hamlet to Goodwood i chose the most direct yet quickest route which was all tar.

Doing it going up will be more challenging as you will climb the Bainskloof Pass, Michells Pass & Gydo Pass all of which is longer from the other end versus from the side i did it. As you can see from the profiles the Gydo & Michells Pass is both short climbs with long descends.

Imagine the shock and horror when i saw this, i knew it was long but surely no that long.

From Tulbagh you can cross the Witzenberg on the the old wapad as used by Cape Epic on your way to Citrusdal

that's not really a great option if it's a loaded bike. if you're coming from tulbagh maybe, but bainskloof side you might as well do mitchells pass then gydo.

Looks like the N7 is the most direct route to ride. I've ridden as far as the West Coast National park but no further. What's the road like beyond this point? Shoulder, safety etc.

fyi west coast national park is on R27, not the N7.

another quieter option (but with limited shoulder and cars flying) is the R44 all the way to porterville. then you head to eendekuil, paleisheuwel and hit clanwilliam from the west.

just carry plenty of fluids & sunblock for the Cederberg leg.

Ja it'll be plenty hot and windy. Not the best time of year, but unfortunately the only time for me. Time to get the fitness up!
