Anyone in PTA riding a Stumpy?

I have been toying with the idea of getting a long(ish) travel do-it-all bike. Something like a Giant Trance or a Specialized Stumpjumper.

Now, I currently ride a 100mm Full-suspension XC Bike and was wondering if I am going to regret going with something with a lot more travel.

So, I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice and their experiences with these bikes as every-day bikes, as I can unfortunately only afford to own one bike.

I mostly ride at the Big Red Barn and Groenkloof and some Wolwespruit occassionally.

I would consider myself to be pretty proficient in the technical stuff and never shy away from some gnarly sections, but my question is centered more on if I would *** af on the open roads, climbs and gravel roads?

I have considered a Camber, but I could just as well get a longer travel fork for my bike then, as it has 120mm of rear travel

Don't expect to ride more than 40km at a competitive pace, bikes like the stumpjumper are built to climb a little better.

But most 140mm + travel bikes are for short trail orientated rides(20km -40km) You can ride more but will feel the geometry and weight starting to work against you.

So far I have heard Pyga(Onetwenty) and The Banshee Spitfire go quite good for longish rides......

Good luck in the hunt :)

I'm on a Giant Trance 2 - 140mm travel front and rear. Do 50km+ rides, and I am not the fittest of guys. I feel very comfortable on it.

Although, for longer rides I sometimes wish I had a 29er. So if your choice is between Trance or Stumpy I would go Stumpy!

Either way you won't regret either one of those bikes!

Hi i also have a question here, i can maybe get a stumpy 29er fsr comp al, but have few cocerns are the services and parts more expensive on a stumpy? Also i ride plus minus 50km trails but also some marathons and stage races would the stumpy affect me negatively, sorry didnt mean to take over the topic just cant find info about this anywhere

Try and rent a Stumpjumper or get a demo bike from Spaz. The Stumpjumper does not climb steep technical trails that well (in my experience) but its an amazingly fun bike. I will always recommend the Camber. A 120mm 29r is just as capable as a 140mm 650B if the geometry is good.

Do yourself a favour and get a demo bike from one of the Spez dealers and go and ride your usual trails with a Stumpy and Camber. Then you can decide. I still say Camber is the best all rounder though.

Hmm - I went to a Stumpjumper from a Specialized Epic and got PB's on the Stumpy on uphills which did surprise me.

Overall an amazing bike and much more fun to ride than the Epic which is very race oriented.

Camber was also something i looked at

Hade a Pyga 120 that done everything !! from Mankele stage races to Hakahana enduro's ( and still only wore baggies )

Upgraded to Pyga 140 Pascoe and can still do most rides but do feel it a bit on the climbs but then again I don't like climbing and prefer the tech gnarly downhills

A good all-rounder with be a Stage Max - 29 er and long-ish travel

you would swear I have shares in Pyga but to be honest  you just cant beat local knowledge and service and awesome guys
