Floris is going well . But Hoffmeyer is still far away and time is not his friend at this stage . Really hope he can make the cut-off .

When does Floris need to be in Hofmeyer?

Mart's achievement this morning and over the past 2 days has been nothing short of phenomenal.

That record will probably stand for a long time to come unless he (or possibly Alex) then makes a dedicated effort a la 2016.

Floris hanging with the big dog into Chesneywold, wants to make sure those fellas in front dont eat all of Minkie's plaaskos.

He's riding well today, but linger too long at lunch and the lunch legs will make him pay in getting up and over to Slaapkrantz.

Up to now his navigation is very good and he might have  go deep into the night to get to Hoffmeyer . We know there are still a few tricky (my standards) navigation sections on route none of which I would attempt at night  :whistling: but he will be forced to do it at his current pace . I am really holding thumbs for the dude .

Nice to see John and Philippa moving on to Kranskop. Days like today they will never forget.

Going to be a bit busy there tonight, but the company will no doubt lift their spirits.

Has been a good day for them - nice also to see Ray Sephton leading the lads around his neighbourhood, bet he's pretty proud today.

Floris actually seems quite brisk on the portages - once he finds the track leading down the valley to Slaapkrantz he should be ok, wouldn't want to be finding the trail leading there in the dark.

why in the pics of Martin are the water bottles on his pack straps?

is he carrying extra water, or just he has no other space for water? Ease of access to drink?

The bottles there are an adventure racer thing, just convenient.

Anyone else notice the different cold weather gloves?

Imagine the conversation went something like this:

Martin:Jeannie have you seen my gloves?, tho cold ones?

Jeannie:no Mart, look in the box from Sani summit

Mart: can only find two different ones, both same size, so cool

Jeannie: great, just make sure ones left and ones right

Martin: ja, good call. Ok different colours, same size, one left, one right. Good to go!

(with apologies to the Dreyers)

Classic. Other thing is he might have lost one on the way!

Very interesting to see his bike

Take a look at @martindreyer3's Tweet: https://twitter.com/martindreyer3/status/875763949605703680?s=09

I think that's a cannondale rush, and without a lefty is probably the medium budget model. So with the cape epic coming out with an average bike value of R95k, it's refreshing to see a R30k bike smashing the course.

Endless pages on tyre choices for Epic.

Martin: Chaoyang tyres please

Yesterday afternoon and last night had some special moments for me.

John Bowen let me know he was pushing for Romansfontein after leaving Philippa at Brosterlea.(They'd had puncture issues) He chose to do this knowing that his light wasn't going to make the night (that's another story which I will leave to Auntie Karma to sort out).

Philippa called to ask me if it was possible to get from Brosterlea to Hofmeyr in one shot (she must be there before 08h00 to beat the cut-off) My response to her was "If you want to, you can leave at 02h00 and do it."

Stop and think about that for a moment. A woman on her own, wat nie 'n woord Afrikaans verstaan nie, setting out into the pitch dark and icy cold. On her own.

When I saw her tracker showing signs of life before 2am it brought on a flood of emotion.

John meanwhile was plugging along on his own and I kept on wondering why he was moving so slowly....he eventually walked in at about 04h00. Walked in the moonlight because his light didn't last the night.

So, to whoever unplugged John's light fom the charger at Kranskop, ....thank you. You gave him a night he won't forget in a hurry.

Here's to them both in Hofmeyr tonight!

Posted

Such a shame that they both pulled out!

They both gave it their best shot.

Philippa is going to ride back roads to Cape Town and John is going to give his ribs a chance to heal.

Let's hope Floris can now take up the baton and beat the cut-offs.
