Hi there Alexander I got myself the garmin vivoactive hr and I am very happy with it.  It has the heart rate sensor built in so you don't need a chest strap.  I have a garmin 810 computer and I link the the vivo to the 810 so my heart rate shows on the 810.  It does most of the things the garmin fenix does at half the price.  Also you cannot beat Garmins warranty.  They not that cheap going for about R5200 on the Garmin site.  It shows every thing you need for a bike computer, if you want to connect to your handle bars you will need a chest strap and a bracket.

Also it has great battery life if you just use it as a watch you can go for 10 days without charging it.  You could almost go through a stage race at full gps mode without charging it (depends how fast you ride :whistling: ), also it charges very fast have not timed it but it takes a fraction of the time of my other devices.

Great to hear that you are happy with it, ours should arrive today. So I am pleased on the good review. I bought ours through Multiply and paid R3100 per unit[emoji39]

why do you want a watch as a matter of interest. I have a forerunner 230 that i use primarily for running, but whenever i ride I am scared that I am going to have a oops and smack it on a rock or something - not that that slows me down!. I guess if you a roadie it is less likely to happen though

I bought myself a Suunto Ambit 2S overseas about a year ago. I got it on special for the equivalent of R2200. It's quite an old watch but it does everything I need it to. I mount it to the bars when I ride so that it's easier to read and doesn't shake around on my wrist(mtb). For trail running or off-road triathlons I just leave it on my wrist the whole way.

If you have a few options, use google and look for the DC rainmaker reviews.

They have go into great depth and a great comparison across the range of similar watches

Budget's pretty crucial... else you could be looking anywhere from R2500 to R12000

The Fenix3 is the bench mark at the moment, there are some good deals to be found from guys who upgraded to the HR version recently... (I'd stick with the HR band for now personally)

You should be able to pick up a good second hand one for around R6k if you keep your eye on the classifieds here

I recently purchased the Suunto Ambit Peak 3 Sapphire... the news Suunto's have come out recently, so they're also pretty good value at the moment. There is this 'new' one for R5k which is a good deal

It's not quite the Fenix, but it's still pretty darn awesome watch for all outdoor activities and the battery life is superb.

Get a Fenix 3 and be done with it, best watch you will ever buy. Get one with an HR strap so you can mount it to the handlebar for those long rides.

I had a few watches before this, the Fenix 3 is just miles ahead of anything else out there (except maybe a Suunto Ambit 3 peak).

Edit: you can pick one up new for around 7, they are on special allot since the HR version came out. Peronally I would stick with the HR strap because you can the mount the watch on your handlebars and still see your HR.

The Fenix 3 is great, but it is massive. I had the HR version for a couple of weeks but couldn't bear wearing it day-to-day so I returned it. It is a cool piece of kit though and does just about everything. The HR doesn't work too well though and I found a few runs I did with it came back with weird results. The vivoactive hr looks like a good alternative.

In the end I bought an Edge 520 and Scosche Rythm plus HR monitor and just ended up using my really old forerunner for running.

take alot had the daily deal in the week on a suunto ambit3 with hr strap for R3800 and I pulled the trigger suited my buget of under 5k used the 'change' for a wahoo cadence sensor to link with it, the tomtom multisport also on daily deal for R2800 ,

What about the TomTom watches? Any good as an entry level device? It has a built in hr monitor so no need for a chest strap.

I would probably just want, distance, speed, hr and maybe cadence. There is also a bike mount for it.

Day 2 of vivoactive HR.. everything seems to be working well.. so far so good.

It's a very clever piece of tech[emoji6]

I am however concerned about my sleeping patterns and lack of deep sleep[emoji23] [emoji23]
