IM Kona 2016

Frodeno was quite pissed at Wiltshire for his swim tactics even mentioning it in some interviews, why in the hell would you obstruct someones swim? Maybe just to mess with him but for what purpose?

Now a question on the rules  based on Wiltshire's behaviour can the refs  actually ping you for it or can Frodeno lodge the complaint- I would think something like unsportsmanlike conduct?

some pictures surfacing on social media regarding the peletons that formed at Kona. Bigger peletons than I recall seeing at local events truth be told. Not here to diss the guys specifically as I understand how they happen and no one wants to give way but by the looks of it IM have a problem.

PE in 2016 was incredibly well policed and I saw very little drafting, but there were < 2000 athletes, I think Kona has 3000. Possibly too may athletes. other alternative is to make them draft legal but that kinda steals the spirit a bit and of course nullifies all these wind cheater bikes.

as the sport is becoming more popular and the demand for events and entrance is high I don't see the organisers limiting entrants to manageable numbers so I guess policing has to be stricter.

if Kona is the pinnacle of athletes then the ethos of Ironman is disappearing if the amount of drafting is anything to go by.

I hope Jan Frodeno does it...think it will be a good race between him and Sebastian Kienle

Ladies, i don't see anyone beating Daniela Ryf... but this could also be a close one

EDIT: But its an endurance event, lots can happen on the day

sjoe. you got your crystal ball waxed there!

I'm a bit surprised we don't have more local cheer for Frodeno - he story is not that far off from froome (ok left a little bit sooner after matric) -

I think Jan got to a stage when he had to make a decision and the defining moment came when we both were invited to a braai in Kloof, where we were to meet a German couple scouting out potential athletes. Jan had what they were looking for, talent and a German passport! South Africa didn’t even bat an eyelid, and the Germans offered it all! “Come to Germany and they will spread those wings!” I was nodding with delight and this was his turning point. This was the move that paved the way for him to develop into what he is now

should be a self monitored sport, but surely there's a tech solution to this - especially for the pros. either a garmin backtracker/varia or a GPS based monitor. Just stop the guys halfway through the run for their penalties so you've got a enough time to process it properly.
