I agree with Brickelberry here.

I saw tons of Gel wrappers on the road today - its terrible - even if clean up crews are employed, cycling is meant to be a clean / green sport.

I had 2 and both went straight back into my pocket to be thrown away after the race. The shirt goes into the wash afterwards anyway.

Greenest thing about this sport is a Cannondale!!

I was not going to start my own thread about a gel wrapper, but hey, when in Rome.

Also at the Shova, just before Inchanga a dude with a very nice Colnago from Midlands Cycling very intentionally threw his gel wrapper into the bushes. (Remember, he is from the Midlands, so it was his own backyard..... )

I was pissed off, so I said to him "Why the F%@k would you do that", to which he asked me what my problem was. I realised that my approach was not right, so I replied; "Apologies for swearing, but you should not be littering!". To which he didnt have a response, and rode on. He got dropped about 5km later, so LOL.

The only reason I mention the Club name is that, later, I again noticed a Midlands Cycling Club dude sucking on a wrapper and I made sure to watch him, just incase. He however he made a big effort to put it back into his pocket. I rode up to him and thanked him for doing such and told him about his teamie, he was less than pleased with his teamie....

Point being that as with many things, its not always the club as such. The people in these clubs need to act like responsible individual adults.

Someone should bring these into the country, or even manufacture them here.

Cant be that difficult to make, and it could even be portable and used in mtb races, just hammer it into the ground and collect after the event.

Races like the Cycle Tour have a few "chuck areas", usually just a little squared off piece of shade netting where you can drop your rubbish without stopping.

They should put those up at traffic lights and corners.....

im imagining how many weekend warriors would bloody hurt themselves trying to ride and throw rubbish simultaneously into that thing   :w00t:   putting  them on a corner would really add to the carnage

its a good idea though we should do it anyways ^_^

That looks like the start of a new sport!

I think its a bit unnecessary to start a whole thread just because someone threw a gel wrapper on the ground. We all know littering is wrong but in my opinion theres a big difference between dropping a sticky gel wrapper in a race situation where clean up crews are employed compared to littering on your local sunday ride.

Just my 2 cents

no its not unnecessary.  I think littering should get you a "banned for life" status in races similar to doping.  its amongst the most filthy habits of all.

How hard is it to put the gel wrapper back in your pocket, FFS?

It was in there when it was full, put it back when it's empty!!!

If you litter, you are a PIG. That's all...

That's assuming Dirty Mike is sucking on his Gu as he passes the cone bin!

IMHO, the only thing that will stop littering is the individual's respect for his/her environment and the fact that it's probably not their land they'r riding on but rather someone who's kindly lent it out for their use.

A box will be a box, I've seen loads of litter right next to empty dustbins before. The problem is the people, not the opportunities for them to behave properly.
