T-Bob Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 So I've been offered a Cane Creek DB inline. 2015 model and taken off a bike after a couple of rides with the owner replacing with a Fox X. Currently have a 2013 / 2014 Fox Float CTD Kashima Boost valve at the back that hasn't done anything wrong at all but I just can't seem to get 100% with it. Maybe I should try more tweaking. Now I'm a set-and-forget'r. Once it's dialled in that's me until it goes for a service and the CCDB looks like a nerds wet dream but it does seem a hell of a shock and better for the kind of trail / enduro riding I want. It's going on a 130mm, single pivot-esque, not-XC-29'r if that is going to make a lot of difference in the advice.
ALLMTB Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 As much as I am a fan of the CCDB Inline, I would say keep the Fox for now. Maybe upgrade to something like the Float X, Monarch, DVO Topaz later onI am currently on my third replacement CCDB Inline. This one has gone in for 'repairs' already and this weekend I noticed that its stuffed...again. That's three shocks in 19 months with the third being 6 months old and needs to go in for repairs a second time. The Inline is best performing shock I've ever had and I love being able to fine tune it but its just not reliable enough. I don't know if I am just unlucky. Also, coming form JHB its a pain to send it in for a service as it needs to go to CTP every time.

ALLMTB Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 Ouch... that is going to keep the guys at Stoke busy! Could repair the other ones or was it new shock time? I wish Stoke was where the shocks get sent to...then maybe they would last longer, but as far as I know Stoke don't service CCDB Inline shocks. Correct if I am wrong. Shock 1: This one lasted quite long, I sent it in for a normal air can service. When I got it back I noticed it could not hold air longer than a couple of hours and on closer inspection I found a gouge in the stantion caused by a tool of some kind. Bad workmanship. This was replaced by shock 2. Shock 2: This one didn't last long at all, maybe a month or so when then damping circuit decided it had enough. It then got replaced as well. A repair might have fixed it but I was gatvol at this stage. Shock 3: This one lasted longer than shock 2 but again the damping circuit decided it too was not willing to work anymore. Got sent in for full damper service/repair. This fixed the issues and the shock preformed flawlessly. And then this weekend I noticed that its gone on strike again. Again, this shocks work amazingly well...for a while.
T-Bob Posted October 17, 2016 Author Posted October 17, 2016 Keep the Fox and get a DVO Diamond Sell the tranny and buy Droo's Phantom...
JXV Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 Had a CTD Kashima Boost shock on my TBLT. Worked OK from new but I found it bobbed a bit if I didn't use the Climb and Trail settings when pedalling. And it hissed a bit and needed a lot of rebound damping. After a full service at LBS it came back near silent and with much improved performance so I can only assume there was previously some air in the damper oil...... very happy with it since. So just saying - your Fox shock is a good product provided it is competently serviced. Also those CTD settings are there for a reason. Riding a whole range of conditions in just one setting will not get the best from it. Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk

You're right, Stoke don't do them, which makes me a bit nervous on top of your feedback. Might roll the dice and keep hold of the Fox and keep it in my back pack with my other vital spares. It sounds a bit like the Lancia's and Alfa's I've owned. Really great... when it works.
Josh0 Posted October 18, 2016 Posted October 18, 2016 Sheez ALLMTB, I am sorry to hear about your CCDB Inline issues. My last one also blew its circuits. I got a warranty replacement about 2 months ago and it is bloody brilliant. I have tuned it to perfection for my Spitty, I just hope it lasts. The Inlines are notoriously unreliable, but apparently Cane Creek has seriously stepped up the QC in the factory where the shocks are assembled. They say even a hair can upset the performance of the shocks, they are precision components. The one I have now has the blue dust seal and I hear they are more reliable. Hoping it holds up. Good luck with yours. Hellocolour, I will also recommend something else until CC have sorted out their issues completely.

His CCDB started the "chirp of death" last month so Isiko (the agents) gave him a replacement with the blue dust wiper. So far so good after about three weeks riding. Mine is still going like a Boeing *touch wood*. It really is the best shock I've had on a bike. Took a lot of fiddling, but now that it's set I am very happy. Besides, it seems there are very few high performance shocks that do not have a niggle. The RS Debonairs get bad feedback for needing crazy pressure to get sag correct, the Float X2's "Xplode", so the way I see it, go for what performs best as long as you are comfortable that the product is backed up by the manufacturer / distributor, which Cane Creek is.
T-Bob Posted October 18, 2016 Author Posted October 18, 2016 Thanks for all the info and opinions. So I'm going to double down... I think I'm going to take the CCDB as it's a hell of a price and it can still lose it's precision addled mind, get rebuilt and it'll still be in 'bargain'(ish) territory. But as a back up for the many times it seems it'll be in the service department I'm going to keep the FOX and see what this little addition will do the ol' CTD. A vorsprung corset air sleeve from ze germans! Ist gut ja? Sorry, apparently they are Canadians. http://ep1.pinkbike.org/p4pb11920845/p4pb11920845.jpg

Maybe you are lucky and the CC shock is one of the good ones and gives you years off no-hassle service It is a wonderful piece of engineering and probably the best shock out there bar the reliability issues. I like your comparison to Lancias and Alfas, it's very fitting. If you would like some more info on the Corset sleeve, then you can contact Dubbelbuys on the Bikehub. He imported one last year and used it for a while before upgrading to a Monarch Plus Debonair.

I will get hold of him and get his thoughts, Thought it might be a bit of fun and change the feel. Gotta mix it up a bit. Not sure if I'm 100% happy about worrying that my shock is going to shat itself every time I pedal out or take a drop but would love to see what the fuss is about.
stefmeister Posted October 18, 2016 Posted October 18, 2016 My CCInline also started chirping, with sloshing air/oil noises and zero damping in the 1st third of the stroke. After a few back and forth repairs with local agent and getting CC international involved it has been working great for the last 8 months now, but I haven't used the Climb Switch since, as I suspect the issues start with that low speed compression circuit/valve system. Personally, I would prefer a simpler, set and forget shock. I don't want to tinker the whole time, and neither do I want to feel that I am missing out on something should a wrong setting be used.Recently installed an off-set bushing to lower the BB height a bit. Didn't change any settings on the shock yet, but it really feels like an improvement (from a damping p.o.v.). So I'm happy with the CC again.

I'm 90kg and I need 260 psi to keep the sag at 30%. I suspect the corset/evol upgrade does more for lighter riders than heavy ones. Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk

If it starts chirping, then it is screwed. My new one is really brilliant, I love it. I read on the Cane Creek forums that some guys suspect the climb switch to be the source of the problem. I still use my climb switch frequently, if it causes crap them I will just have to send the shock in again...... We should start a support group for CCDB Inline owners hehehe.
