Hi there...I wonder if you could offer me some advice. My local cycle shop has a sale on at the moment. ..and I'm thinking of buying the Specialized Epic comp 2016 model. I don't do stage racing..can't take too much time off.....I cycle every weekend for 40 plus km . I'm 44 yrs young...and my fitness level is OK ish. ...Am I mad to spend R33 000 on this bike ? Many thanks. Rob

You're not mad at all for spending that - it is a very good bike. Just keep in mind it is a full-on xc bike, and from the sounds of it a Specialized Camber might suit you better. Slacker and more comfortable geometry.

Hi Grease_Monkey...I hear you...but no Camber on sale at that price. Do you think I should wait for another sale...or buy a Camber later on ? Thanks. Rob

If you are certain it's a camber you want then wait, there is a sale every couple of months, just keep an eye out. That's the bike I'd go for if I was you, the epic is a race bike and not exactly what I would call "fun". Camber gives you a great race bike with allot of versatility which is also allot of fun. This is of course only my opinion...

Many great deals to be had in the classifieds as well - if you are considering 2nd hand.

As above.

If you are riding for fun buy a bike to match, don't throw your money at one you will replace a few months down the line when you realise it is ***. Took me many years to fathom this out...

Grease Monkey, why do you keep mentioning Geoff Allot(t)?

I have an Epic with a 50mm stem, 780 bars, a dropper and wide ish rims and it is super fun.

I do however reckon the camber is a better option. Or a Pyga 110... there are some super cheap ones going in the classifieds and they are very very capable.

Lol I do always get that wrong. Good article though ;)

Agreed... Pyga 110 also a great option!

Ok, just come back from a ride and was thinking about bike options...

1. If riding up a hill puts a massive smile on your face, then this bike is the one for you.

2. If heading down a hill puts a massive smile on your face, then this isn't the bike for you.

Great bike for the money. And you won't find a new Camber for that, their all sold. I suggest either looking used, or saving up R7k and getting a new Camber Comp. It's worth the wait. I am really happy that I bought mine. That being said, the Pyga 110 is popular for a reason, so seriously consider it too.
