This year ive done all the aquella ocean series racing 3km swims in PE - this past sunday has had the best conditions (flatter than a pancake) but also the coldest water we've had so far, not sure what the sea temp was but enough to burn your face for the 1st minute or two, get a suit can only imagine how much energy to keep the body warm will be lost if its as cold, but you can get away without one, i just wouldn't

I just want to be 100% sure....

Is personal seconding allowed? I can't seem to find anything in the race info guide but from what I remember an athlete is not allowed to receive any outside assistance (food/drinks/nutrition) form spectators.

All I actually want to know is: Are you allowed to get some food or other nutritional stuff from your spectators/support or do you have to pack that stuff in the special needs bags?

So now that the guys have been proper tools and you still have no answer  and you are just not in the mood to trawl through the race guide, there is absolutely no personal seconding allowed, don't take or hand anyone anything who is not part of the race, simple as that. Don't give your kit to mammie if you want to get rid of it, dont throw it away unless in a litter zone-the Special needs area is not a Litter Zone. I saw a guy get DQed in 2012 about 1km out when his mate who had finished the race ran with him. But then the refs were quite bedonderd-they seem to have chilled a bit.

Some new stuff I read: Tops are not to be undone pass the sternum, Ah well was really hoping for some girls to get hot and heavy, so just have to find other entertainment.

No showers at the swim exit-it was always usefull to get the salt off your face at least-but I usually have a water bottle in my transition bag to wash my mouth out so will just wash my face.

Mountainbikes are allowed-WTF??? Just saw that-must be a mistake?

Now that I think of it-if you throw away your kit in a litter zone I think they can ping you as it would count as discarding equipment? Any Refs out there?

saw that about mountain bikes too, don't think its an error but unlikely to be any.

I see there is no official swim training this year.  I think its better than standing in those queues in any case.

I avoided those like the plaque and just swam at kings beach or something. total waste of time

I very much doubt they would flag you, after all a watter bottle is considered kit too I would think... and there will be thousands fo those around.

I was almost DQ'ed in 2012 when a mate decided to cycle on his mtb along the run route at the back of the University and started talking to me on my looooong walk.

But yes, they seem to have mellowed a bit over the years.

Wish the event was this weekend already...

ICM Good point, but I dont agree with you-but let's ask around and here what the technical officials say. Just interisting to find out

As far as I know a year or two back they changed the rules to the extent that the run route has not litter zones anymore - you can effectively litter wherever (obviously easier to contain and clean up on the new run route).  A lot of noise was made by unhappy DQ'ed athletes since dropping a water sachet 2 meters after a teardrop indicating the end of a litter zone on the run route is bull**** - especially while some okes are forming a group in the cycling leg and gets away with it.  If I pay R6,000 for an entry they can clean up a 5km stretch of road.  Obliviously the bike is different.

Also IM changed into a bit of a moneymaking machine.  If they where really serious about fair play they would test the top 10 of each age group for steroids for starters and cap the amount of entries so that there is enough road for the drafting rules.

I don't think an athlete handing someone a piece of clothing is outside assistance.  If you are being handed something that is something totally different.  Whats the difference between handing your top to your buddy or handing it to the bin?

In any case I have noted the referees to have a more "remedial" approach.  I have seen them stop bikers littering and then sent them back to pick up their litter rather than DQ'ing them outright.

That stretch on the old route was incredibly hard!  Uphill into the wind normally.

This is why the MiWay events seem like good value for money to me.

I was looking at that and thought it looked a little rough.

I took an absolute beating at MiWay Durban Ultra Tri on the 21km run, absolute bath.... decent enough bike - well I was conservative, but from 3km, I had absolutely NO / NOTHING / ZIP, NIKS, NADA, fokol energy. I reverted walking and the heat was just unbearable. Most stations ran out of water and eventually bakkie full loads of ICE was delivered.... needless to say, I finished in 6h35m with a 2h55 WALK :-O

I cobbed that one as my bad run for the season and knowing that a tough marathon 1 week at Deloitte didn't help my Ultra cause (Thank goodness I saw this Ultra as part of my training for IM 2017)

1 week later I ran a PB 21km at Sarens at 1h38...

So never give up and bailing is not an option.

GOOD LUCK YOU ALL! time is close.
