Local carbon wheels

I am looking to buy a pair of quality carbon wheels for my road bike. The reputable international brands (Zipp, ENVE, Mavic etc) are simply just out of my price range. Therefore I am looking at what the local South African manufacturers have to offer. The ones that I have managed to identify are:

  1. Darkhorse
  2. South Industries (Although I think they make MTB wheels only)
  3. Sentiinel (60mm and 88mm only)
  4. Token
  5. Black Spade
  6. Corse
  7. Concept

Which of these companies offer the best value for money? Which offer the best quality? Which should be avoided at all cost? Any feedback from your experiences will be greatly appreciated!

if it was mtb wheels I would say South without a doubt.

I dont think Token are made locally but out of that list would be the ones I would go for.

Alternatively some good Chinese hoops on good hubs built by someone who knows what they are doing.

I might be mistaken, but none of the wheels you listed are made locally (except of course South, but they only do MTB).

mmm...ok.

The ones I listed are the ones for which I could find websites with a South African domain.

exactly what he said

all the rest are a mix of Chinese made carbon with some (and in some cases none) local input about the mixture of components used

token , darkhorse   will back up what you buy

Love my concepts and Leonard is a great guy to deal with - also i find the ride and handling of the 25C tyres so much nicer than the 23C

Token C50's

Not cheap though, but great back up and after sales support. That makes a big difference when spending $$$

I see the C50's come in three models: Prime, Arsenal or Zenith.

I have been really happy with my Corse 650 B MTB rims.

Almost 2 years & absolutely no issues !

I would recommend them.

The Arsenal C50's where on sale just a few days ago @ R21k. Give Warren a call and chat to him.

This is what I would do. Actually have done it and going to do it again. You get to spec the wheels with exactly what you want and number of spokes etc for cheaper than locally available chinese sold wheelsets

All of them will be very quick to sell you a set of rims, but for me its always been about the after sales...because life happens

Have a set of DH, life happened X2 and without any shadow of a doubt , one of the best after sales I have ever experienced.

Cant really comment on other brands as I am yet to Ride/Test them
