My daughter turns 8 at the end of November and I want to buy her another or new bike with gears but can't overspend (R3000,00 max), do I get a Avalanche 24" girls bike new or will a better specced second hand xs 26" work?

A bad day cycling is better than a good day working.

Bought my Daughter a 24 and she outgrew it very quickly - but then we the parents are the parents are both very tall.

Depending on how she is growing or how tall she may grow a 26 may be an option.

Hi BSG, rule of thumb puts an average 8 to 10 year old on a 24",as you might have been told.

However, as mentioned above, if she can clear the standover height on a XS 26" then that would probably be the better buy, just check whether the reach from saddle to handlebar is not to long. This can be changed with a shorter stem though.

The only other problem you might have is finding a XS 26" bike second hand, they are usually a bit scarce. Happy bike hunting.

My daughter is 9 and among the taller kids in her class. Bought her a 24 and it should be fine for a good couple of years. A 26 will be to big in my opinion

My daughter was about 9 when I put her on an xs 26inch. In hindsight, I don't think it was a good idea. The bike was very big for her. She is now 15 and still riding it.

My son is now 8 and I'm planning on moving him to a 24 inch.

Thanks for everyone's input, I know that a 24" will be the correct size for now, so maybe that will be the best way to go. 24" bikes are for 8-12 year olds so I'd rather go for it not to scare her of from cycling again.

My daughter went from 16inch to 20inch to 26xs (axis a90) ...

and then from the 26xs to 29er medium this year at 12 years ..

I cant remember when the transition from 20 to 26xs happened .. but thats the size change that worked for us ..

How we did it : found the largest bike that worked for her on the smallest settings ....

We went for a fit today, 24" ok but will not last a year, but I had her on a small Avalanche 26" and it is almost the correct size. Ordered a xs 26".

Well, her 8th birthday is tomorrow and I've gone through the trouble to wrap her old BMX in the box. She doesn't suspect a thing because I told her we're struggling at this stage. But this one will appear once I've seen the disappointment on her face.

Well, it took her almost a month to get back on the bike with December being so busy by us with cars etc in and out of the campsite the whole day, but now she rides every day, even when it rains she wants to ride and I've put a cheap computer on for inspiration. She is enjoying the 26" x-small bike so much, busy learning the gears now as well.
