get the 6Fattie and a spare set of 29er wheels... Sorted and job done. Many brands are doing 275+ bikes. Scott and Giant both do. The XTC even has sliding dropouts allowing you to set it up as a SS if you like

Each to his own.

My opinion and experience.

In the last few races I did (including stages) there were always a few guys on fatbikes. Most of them looked much fitter than me and were much younger. They usually storm out and attack climbs. And we always catch them on the climbs. Just to make way for them storming down the other side past us. Until the next climb that is.

I agree with other posts stating that if you want fattie, get a set of 29er wheels for marathons.

New Giant Anthem 27.5 with 120mm front, some fat 2.4 knobbly tires on 1 wheelset for trail riding, and xc tires on a light wheelset for marathons. This would be my choice if I wanted 1 bike to play on the trails and ride xc marathon.

I meant Giant Anthem 27.5.

Do not be confused by FatBikes and Plus bikes. Not the same at all!

Yes but + I feel is also too fat, I would prefer 2.4 tyres on a 27.5 dually, unless I want to ride sand dunes and beaches.

I think you need to ride a plus more.

3" is a far cry from 4-5" and not that far from 2.4"

i already have that ( Giant Trance 27.5 ) and yes Fat bike and 27.5+ ...2 completly different beasts

Im talking possible Anthem but in 29er guise as apparently it is going to have same specs ( read Geometry ) as the new 27.5 ...ie slacker ..more sus etc

or like i was originally asking 27.5+

Haven't read the whole thread, so might be repeating what has already been said.

I have a Spez Stumpie 6Fattie, going to buy a 29er wheelset so I can swop out for longer XC type rides.

The 6Fattie wheels are awesome, lots of fun to ride, and they roll faster than you would think - BUT not as fast as 29ers up long hills. If your main focus is XC then fatties are not the way to go. For me, my main focus is fun on the bike with a focus on downward facing trails and I love the plus tyres for that. I am in Morgan Bay now - and right after I finish this post I am gonna go for a nice ride on the beach - can't do that on skinnies!

That being said I am going to get a 29er wheelset as I find longer 80km+ rides does find me wanting less roling resistance.

My advice - get a bike that is compatible with both 27.5 plus and 29er wheels, and get a second wheelset - that is what I have done (well still need the 29ers wheelset - its moer expensive and my wife is still in the slow process of forgiving me for buying my stumpy 6Fattie) and it is by far best cycling decision made to date!

Cheers!

I was not aware of geo changes to the Anthem 29er, have they managed to shorten the chainstays?

Edit: For a hardtail 27.5+ is great for comfort. But then swopping out for 29er wheels on the same hardtail for marathons is not that great for comfort.

#justsaying...im not buying a hardtail..have been riding DS for way to long

Yes the new Anthem 29er ( only coming out in 2017 ) will be more of a Trail version....shorted chainstays..slacker Head angle..120mm suspension ( basically the NEW 27.5  but in 29er version )

Great thread

My 5 cents worth

My regular ride until the beginning of the year was an Intense Spider 29er. In January, I jumped into the fatty scene with an On-One Fatty. Until last weekend, I rode my Intense only twice. This bike was a blast. Slow on the climbs and heavy on the long rides, but acres of fun. One of the most enjoyable bikes I have ever ridden..........until.........

Last Friday I took delivery of a Trek Stache 29+. 65km on Saturday and some technical mucking about on Sunday. Sorry Spider, even more dust gathering for you. This bike is even MORE fun with faster climbing and more grip than my abilities can exploit.

At the end of the day, only ONE thing matters.......what do YOU want???

Have fun. Safe and happy cycling and enjoy your shopping.

Stache with rigid or suspension fork? How're you liking the CHupacabras?
