Wednesday Update

Morning RHR - 55bpm

Weight - 123.9 kgs

Training - None today, I will be playing golf later on.

I think I will, for the time being, just put in the time in the saddle. Im planning on doing three more 15km rides this week. Next week I'll do the same as this week, but up the mileage to 20km.

Once on holiday I will try to do the loop there (thats about 40km) about say three times a week for the two weeks. That would in total give me about 500km for December.

At this stage I don't know whether I would be able to go on the bike for three hours, but I'll maybe try one such ride during December. From January I will work with a more structured approach.

Thursday Update

Morning RHR - 50bpm

Weight - 124.8kg (still moving in the wrong direction)

Training - Did a 18km ride this morning Avg HR 131

The ride this morning felt good. I am hoping to do about 100km this week so I think I will do two of the same rides tomorrow and Saturday and take Sunday as a rest day. I also had a look at Fittrack's website again. I had a profile there so some of my earlier data is on there. I quite like the graphs. My current fitness score is at 7.4 so it will be interesting to see that go up as well. I think I'll post that with my updates as well.

What I'm trying to say is that I find it extremely difficult to increase fitness while dramatically trying to lose weight at the same time. But I'm no expert.

I live by the BDF cycling pledge. One day. Every day. #9Rules

Very similar experience for me training for Trans Baviaans. I could easily do a slow 3 to 3.5hr ride on nothing but water but trying to up my pace I kept having problems no matter what I did. I tried eating 'proper' food but had to switch to Hammer Perpetuem which a concerned friend (who was sure I was out to kill myself) gave me to try. That worked!

The funny thing is that I lost 6kg mainly after switching strategy. I kept carbs low during the week only using the HP for rides longer than 3-4hrs which we did weekends but found it helped to have a carb shnak like jelly babies the day before our long rides... I could not keep up the intensity otherwise and fell off the pace badly on hills.

So, same thing. No power. No speed.

But riding as much as you have to, for training, as long as you keep to your normal diet and don't increase what you eat, you're sure to lose weight!

Good luck with the challenge you've set yourself! My 2c, I'd divide it in two. Get lean and get cycling fit. There is of course some cross over but you're not going to get lean from the amount of riding you'll be doing and you're not going to get cycling fit by losing weight. Overall I'd say 50% of the challenge is what you eat and 50% the amount of training you can do. Good luck.

I am, at this stage, just planning to cut out all of the junk from my diet. If I do that and with the riding I will surely lose weight.

Good luck with your target. If you believe it you will make it. Can i suggest a diatician and coach to help you reach that goal

PrinceVlad, I am glad to see you've put your mind to doing (and hopefully finishing) the Cullinan 2 Tonteldoos MTB Ultra. The most important thing at this point in time will be total commitment and dedication. There is not enough time left to have a haphazard, unstructured approach to your training program and diet. Decide exactly what you want (and have) to do and start NOW... with total commitment!

Good luck and I look forward to seeing you at the start line as well as the finish line of C2T 2017!

Friday Update

RHR - 55bpm

Weight - 125.4kgs (still moving in the wrong direction)

Training - None yet

Today I can definitely feel that I did not sit on the couch the whole week as usual. My legs are not sore, but they feel heavy. I will see how I feel this afternoon and then maybe go for a ride. If not, I will definitely go tomorrow and take a rest this afternoon.

If you want to loose weight being very diligent about your diet is a key requirement.  You need to control the amount of calories you are taking in as well as the type. As your training volume goes up your body adopts and you may see your metabolism crank up. You may be feeling more hungry than before. If you don't control this you may end up eating more than you burn and gain weight.

I follow your story with interest. Good luck and enjoy the journey :)

Good idea. Please add daily calorie intake to your summary.

Thanks. That will be a good idea to keep things in check. I find myfitnesspal to be the easiest. Any other suggestions?

I've been using MyFitnessPal for years and it works great. Can scan barcodes especially Woolworths foods. You'll quickly understand how much you need to eat to achieve daily intake. Mentioned earlier but aim to improve quality of diet rather than just quantity.
