You know what I mean!

Ja ja, I know - just highlighting that it's not possible without our team.

edit: for their first time, the team for this weekend's event did a great job. What I've learnt in 10 years they had to learn in a few months.

Not directed at you, but a general reply to anyone that feels the same but hasn't said it openly.

No doubt the communication could improve - not only for the provincial events but from the province as a whole. Unless events are advertised on one of a few online entry portals, the information is hard to find - let alone all the other non-race specific information. Considering Gauteng has one of the highest number of cyclists, the income generated from the membership fees (R50-R75 per person) plus the portion of the rider levy charged at every race should be enough to spend on a website (creation plus maintenance). There are other sources of income, which I only found out about yesterday, but that's not going to solve the problems of communication.

Huge difference between "poor communication" and not having info.

Surely if one asks what time you start, it was communicated.  The fact that it constantly CHANGED made it a mess.

The fact that they decided to race during the warmest part of the day made riders not pitch.

The fact that they had it on laps made the organisation of the event and bunches etc just HARDER on themselves.  Why would you want to do that?

The link to the Mpumalanga road race is not working - would be interesting to see which pros were there that usually ride in local races.

Mpumalanga even had a hill-climb (same as last year) in their events.

Imagine that!!!

Hell....there are more (and stronger) Elite riders pitching up for the weekly Velo ride than there was at Provincials!

The riders deciding to stay away as a result of the poor communication leading up to the event are also part of the problem - not THE problem, but a part of it. Any cyclist serious about their racing will know when/how/what or make an effort to find out.

I am serious about my racing.  So are my fellow team mates.  But they are all people with families.

Changing start times the day before creates havoc with BASIC things like babysitters. (Small example)

Having no idea or info off the course one month prior to a provincial event, is just a joke.

I made efforts to find out.  But up until Friday my team still though race start was at the stadium.  Come on!

We are all at work and don't want to check our venue and start times 4 times in 2 days just to make sure nothing changes....

I wonder how many Vets had a look at their start times on Friday and saw 11:30 start and pitched up on Sunday only to find out the start was 6:30? (Some posts above shows this problem out)

There were more positive comments yesterday than negatives ones which means the cyclists that do participate are at least trying to be a part of the success of the event.

Racing in general is always fun and with you helping out and willing people helping, I think the race part will always have positive comments.  The positive comments are not going to help you improve a dying event for next year though......

Some thoughts for future(If you really want to hold a "Provincial Championship):

  • Decide on a route like within the next month
  • Get approval for the route before July
  • Get a sponsor for the event in order to get the costs down for the organisers.  Try and make a profit if you think that will help "motivate" the organiser
  • Racetec (Which was used with good effect) is a must
  • Get the route details, profiles, info, venue all out to riders before Oct
  • Don't change the route or the start times once it is published (In October)
  • Make provincials compulsory in order to compete in SA's.  Even if you have to do 2 provincials a year.  Hell.....MTB they have a whole CUP series!
  • Make entryfees FREE to riders 16 and younger.

Personally I think this Provincials thing is "all in the past"

It serves no purpose anymore (Provincials).  Its sole purpose in the old days was to compete against each other in order to see who gets to go to SA champs.  This has fallen away.  Anyone can do SA's

And SA's are the main thing for a pro or a "serious athlete".

Better spending of resources and money would be to have a "Selection criteria" (well defined and communicated) for the WHOLE year where a road cyclist can qualify for SA's by doing well organised and known events.  Kind off like the Masters World champs are run at the moment I think where the top 25%? of the field in certain events are allowed to enter world champs.

Skip the whole provincials mess and make SA's just this HUGE event in which all provinces can compete against.

My last 2c on this.

We'll probably bitch about this again next year. Gives us old people something to moan about......

Nope, all very quiet!  Gauteng East hosted it this year, so I would guess one of the other regions will host 2018.  I assumed their comms would be way better, guess not!!!
