Also running the Sram GX combo with no problems.

Yup, always used X01 or XX1 before. GX is just as good albeit slightly heavier but at the price difference it's a no brainer!!

Whats the most cost effective 11 Speed setup for MTB?

What's the best gear ratio to go for. I need to not run out of gears on flats & slight downhill and need an easy gear fro steep climbs.

Been suggest to go with 11-42 and front ring 30, 32 or 34.

Any suggestions please on what to buy, where, what gear ratio etc. Thanks.

Found this,

Sram NX, cheapest and works amazingly bonus is the built in clutch so you never have to think about switch on/off the clutch. I'm running a 42/11 with a 32 absolute black oval on the front... This setup works really well I ride to the top of helderberg with my Reign so it's no xc machine and I never run out of gears on the way down.

Value for money must be Shimano but shifting with SRAM is superior.

Rubbish! Both work well. The feel is different so preference plays a part.

Any time one feels superior to the other it means the inferior one was not correctly set up. So many times I hear 'Brand X is useless' but then find the components are worn out or incorrectly adjusted.

Both work, SRAM works better. Loosen your tie, it's like Friday today. Take the afternoon off.

I've had Sram NX 1x11 and a Shimano SLX set-up (2x10). The Sram NX just felt better than the SLX shifter, so if it was me I would go Sram NX instead of SLX. But at the end of the day the difference is so minor, and comes down to preference, you will be happy with both.

If I can make a suggestion though, spend the extra money on getting a Sram GX cassette (10-42t). I ran a 11-42 cassette for a while and I had to choose - go 34t chainring and run out of easy gears on hills, or go 32t and run out of hard gears on flats. I now run a 10-42t with a 32t chainring and I find I have great range...

Got to agree with JXV.

There is very little to separate SRAM and Shimano shifting, apart from feel.

SRAM has a heavier, slightly clunkier feel to its shifting, but you can tell exactly how much the mech is moving when pressing the shifter. Shimano has a lighter shift feel.

Agreed, I have XX1 1x10 on my bike and are looking at XT. Whereas many SA commentators here advocate SRAM, most of the international reviewers love the XT. Apparently the puppies nuts is combining the XT derailleur with an XTR shifter, but I am not sure the difference between the XT and XTR shifters is worth R1000.
