How long does a cycling pant last?

Hey, since I've been doing more commuting, and spending more time on my bike than ever before, I've started to wonder about how long one should wear a pair of cycling shorts? (ones including chamois).

I just bought a pair of First Ascent 8 pad domestique, and the padding seems awesome.

But having said that, for commuting purposes, I'm using a wide variety of different cycling shorts (lycra's, baggies etc. all with differing levels of 'Chamois Life'.. i.e. brand new pair, versus a 3 year old Adidas lycra, versus a 2 year old First Ascent baggy, vs a 12 year old Sportsmans Warehouse Lycra with chamois that now is more like 'plat sponge'... but still super comfy mind you :)

I guess it also depends on how long your average ride is... I wouldnt dare ride the Sportsmans Warehouse specials on a 4 hour ride for instance, but for commuting they seem to be perfect...

How long are you all riding your shorts for? I almost threw my Sportsmans Warehouse specials out the other day... but they are too comfortable. Haha  :w00t:

The panel material determines the life of a pair of cycling pantS, not so much the padding.

Of even greater consequence is the washing and drying process as well as the number of hrs spent in the pantS.

If you do the Rand/Km calculations, its scary.

I have Assos bibs that are 4 years old, still use them.

Cheap stuff didn't last a year. So I stopped wasting money on cheap kit.

Cheap is expensive.

What the Patchoracle says.....he's like a truth serum

Hmmm I'm a bit scared to try this out and it's so hard to tell one persons 4 years vs anothers... in terms of km's, wear, level of care etc. I really want to take the plunge because Assos do seem so much nicer. I am getting tired of my stuff not lasting...

Ok, how do you guys wash your kit? Gooi it in the washing machine on cold or hand wash? I prefer to hand wash. Kit lasts longer imo.

Hand wash only, using a washing powder that does not have enzymes in it. They actually destroy natural lycra. Doing this, my various pairs of shorts have lasted years. Still wear my first pair of assistance I bought about 3 years ago, they look and feel great.

Could you give some examples of which you use/avoid like the plague?

Interesting. What brands of washing powder do you use?

I wash all my sports clothing in the auto machine. Cold water, and short cycle. No fabric softener. No tumble drying, and no hanging out in the sun. All seems to last a decent length of time

Do it, you won't be sorry.

I have 3 Assos bibs.

S5 that I bought in 2012

S7 Tequip that I bought in 2013

I still use both often, I do lots of riding. These shorts must have 20000km between them.

Recently bought the S7 Centos for the Desert Dash, very expensive but amazing.

Haven't ever special washed any of them, in the wash with my undies.... Think you need to be a bit rough with them to keep them respectful.
