Difficult question to answer.  It is like saying you are going to a party, what size jeans would look best?

Everyone is different, depends on your weight and how strong you are.  Look up the segments for the climbs in the area, and the gradients.  Go find hills of equal gradient and length close to where you stay and ride them, and then see how you feel :)

It only get seriously long and steep after the turn-off to Nelspruit.  If you are an A/B bunch rider you should be good with a 39/25 set-up.  Ditto for Spitzkop on stage 2.

To be on the safe side, a 27 is best.

I would agree here. Did the jock last year. and made the mistake of going full on compact. 50/32 with a 11/28 at the back. And yes i survived the climbs. but if it comes to the downhills you spin out. (Got droped 2 times because of this  )

So I will defiantly say go 52/36 or 53/39 in front. and 11/28 or if you can go to a 11/32 at the back.

Run your normal crank 53/39 with a 28/11

Else you will get dropped on the descents.

The passes aren't steep, they are just long, and if you need to use a compact crank, just rather train a bit harder. There is still plenty of time.

Thanks guys. Running 53/39 with a 25/12. Think the 28/11 will make a big difference for climbing?
