Bought 2new maxxis ikon tyres from a shop 6 weeks ago. They were on sale for R350 a tyre. Backwheel sidewall got ripped today for no reason, I wasnt even doing ofroad. Now I just wonder if its posibilly fakes or is this what happens when its not EXO. 6 weeks.

A mate of mine won 2 of them at one of the USN events. Ripped both of them (ones with sidewall protection). Put one on my sons hardtail , ripped the sidewall as well and for no apparent reason.

I've used Ikons for about 2 years. Only just got a snake bite at the bead the other day - my fault, going crazy speed over square-edge rocks in Tokai. Otherwise, they've been excellent to me.

Really bad to hear... As I am currently running two on my hardtail (3C/EXO/TR model). Won't be happy at all if it happens to me.

yes that is what happens when its not EXO

The EXO compound is what makes the sidewall so thick and strong.

Sorry for the bad luck there.

The ones I mentioned were all EXO's

Rider weight, tyre pressure and application all factors. Exo/TR been very good to me. Run IKON's on the rear on both my hard tail and dual s/s without issues now for over 2yrs flat out. Sorry for ur bad luck bud.

I have been using these for the last 3 years and I will not use any other tyre.

Running a non tubeless on the back at the moment and have absolutely no issues.

Well, in that case, I am not worried anymore. I am a very light rider. :)

One tyre that I've been consistently happy with as an all rounder. If you're running them front and rear I'd recommend swapping them around (any tyre) every couple of months or so to extend the lifespan. Also a good exercise to make sure your sealant is topped up.
Consider taking a look at the 2.3 wide ones, makes a difference.

Definitely opt for the EXO! The TR non-EXO version is essentially still the same tyre, but more prone to cuts, great to keep as a spare/emergency tyre though.

Cool thanks for the input guys. I previousely had ardent race exo and went over rocks etc with them with no problems. Might go for crossmark or ardents again tomorrow. Thanks again everyone.

Haha will do so if it worn out. Tyres are brand spanking new.

save the one tyre you currently have up-front for a replacement rear when its due for replacement. trust me, the barzo will handle loads better on the front.

I hear you, but unfortunately I do not have money now (I am still in school) so yeah...

EDIT: But will keep this advice going forward.

Old post I know, just taking a chance here, maybe some of you are still around.. Any of you guys know the expected lifespan of these Maxxis Ikons? I'm running a Ikon 2.2 at the back and a Ardent 2.4 on the front. After 3600km the Ardent still looks great, but the Ikon has very little tread left. I've put these tyres through hell and they are holding up very nicely! Will fit the same combo again..just wondering how far I can push the Ikon.. Maybe another 400km, or another 1400km? All previous tyres(Scwhalbe and Kenda) I had to replace because of sidewall cuts/snakebites etc. This is the first time I have to think of replacing tyres because of tread running low.
